What her photos also show is her sweetness.

She is a volleyball player and on the dance team so she keeps herself busy. We managed to incorporate that into her session also.

We trekked to the Governor's Mansion and then over to Ward Meade Park for her session on a chilly day, and believe me, the sun in these photos was deceiving! We wrapped her up in a blanket in between photos!

She is so genuine and I think that comes through. Classic and classy. I hope that in 30 years, she will look back with her kids and think "I still love these photos."

Chayt | Class of 2023 | Santa Fe Trail | Overbrook, Kansas Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2023/2/chayt-class-of-2023-overbrook-kansas-senior-photographer-overbrook-kansas I think I have mentioned on my blog before that a majority of senior boys tend to hate doing senior pictures. Not all, but most that I have done. It just doesn't interest them, and one even told me "I'm only doing this for my mom." Fair enough. I appreciate the honesty actually.

Chayt opted for a sorter session because he was kinda in the middle. He wanted photos done, but not a full senior session with 2-hours worth of photos. Enough to make both him and his sweet mom, Jen, happy.

We spent an afternoon session on the main street of Overbrook and then down at Pomona Lake to give a little variety. Both turned out beautifully.

Afterward, his mom sent me such a sweet message about how the session sent and how comfortable he felt once we got started. The ultimate compliment, really. And it was so heartfelt and very much appreciated on my end.

Even if you don't want to get crazy with senior photos, we can still make them fun!

You might remember her as my Little Miss Wheelchair Kansas 2015 when I was crowned in March 2015. Our families have been close so when her mom reached out about her senior photos, I wasn't too surprised. Excited but not surprised.

We rolled the dice on the weather, and even though it was C O L D that day, we made it work. We went to South Park in Lawrence, Kansas and then down the street to Mass Street Music where they let us set up and shoot.

Delaney loves her pictures. I've never seen a 17-year-old so excited about high school and life and just everything. Delaney is a gem.

Before and After Friday | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2023/1/before-and-after-photoshop-friday I like to show sometimes what the photos look like straight out of the camera versus what the end result is. I tend to shoot a little bit dark.

This family picked a BEAUTIFUL spot in Heritage Park just a little bit of drive from my house. That sun was worth it.

Would you like to see more of these? I personally am intrigued by this - it really shows the art of shooting vs editing!

The Barnes Family | Pomona Lake | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2023/1/the-barnes-family-pomona-lake-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Jessica and Charles have become pretty good friends of ours, and we have to thank our daughters. Softball, volleyball, fire department, birthdays, sleepovers, fun all around. There are very few people in this world that I trust with my kid, and they are some of those people.

Jessica and I weren't so sure we could get many photos on this day because it was windy, but we were both pleasantly surprised! It turns out that the faster we move with these 3 girls, the better they turn out!

It was so nice to meet her husband and girls, and it didn't take long to figure out that they are just the cutest. It was chilly, but the girls didn't complain once. Just look at how sweet this family is.

Joanne and Jerry | Pomona Lake | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2022/12/joanne-and-jerry-pomona-lake-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Joanne and I are on the Board of Directors for our Fire District, and I am just so glad that she decided to do this session with Jerry, her husband of 60 years. People that know these two know how special it is. Jerry has Alzheimer's, and while it is progressing, this day was a good one. He was alert and present in the moment. It was so great.

We went to a small cabin at Pomona Lake where they had their 50th wedding anniversary celebration, and it was a gorgeous evening. it turned out to be pretty warm for late fall, and the sunset was perfect.

When I sent these to Joanne, she was thrilled. Besides knowing that it had been a good day for Jerry, I don't know if she knew quite what to expect. She said that it was like she was seeing the Jerry from 10 years ago, which of course, is the biggest compliment I could get.

It will always been one of my favorites.

The Kent Family | KS State Capitol | Family Photographer | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2022/8/the-kent-family-ks-state-capitol-family-photographer-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Marsha won this session from a silent auction to raise money for a hospice foundation near our home.

She and her family couldn't have been nicer and more open to my suggestions for posing and prompts. They played along when I asked them to dance or run toward me through the pretty tunnel at the Capitol Building. And my favorite Ring-Around-The-Rosy.

The weather was great - just a little windy - and I couldn't have been happier with these.

Logan and Heather | Wedding Photographer | Snyder's Cabin | Topeka, Kansas Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2022/5/logan-and-heather-wedding-photographer-snyders-cabin-topeka-kansas-photographer

I have known Logan since we were young, like 10 years old. We went to the same schools until we were teenagers.

Now 25 years later, I am shooting his wedding.

Their ceremony was held at Snyder’s Cabin at Gage Park on one of the windiest days of the year, it feels like. But we managed to make it work.

Weddings are always emotional, and of course, this was no different.

Heather looked gorgeous. Logan was trying to hold it together as he watched her walk down the aisle, and I think I spent more time watching my old friend watch his bride come to him while most everyone else was watching her.

He was so happy and so in love.

They had a beautiful evening with their families and friends.

Meet Your Photographer | Carrie Sunday | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2022/3/meet-your-photographer-carrie-sunday-overbrook-ks-family-photographer I think that most everyone on my client list either knows me in real life - or knows someone who knows me. There probably aren’t many that need an introduction to me, but that is exactly what I am going to give you today! Because well, visitors to my website probably DON'T know me.

Going into March already, I want to be a little more “Carrie” and a little less “Carrie the Photographer.” Meaning that I want you all to get to know ME, my family, the goofy stuff we like and the things that make us happy. I want you to feel like you are going to see a friend when we are planning your shoot. To me, it is important that you trust me. And to trust me, you have to know me, right?

So here are a few quirky little things:

  • I am a Disney mom. I love all things Disney. The movies, the merch, Disney World. It all just makes me happy. Also, fun fact! The air at Magic Kingdom smells like sugar, for real. It’s a thing they do, and I am not crazy. My husband thought I was though.
  • I like planners. No, let me correct that. I LOVE planners. Give me a stationery store and a big wad of cash, and we are in trouble.
  • My house is full of plants, and the cat has probably chewed on every single one. It drives me crazy, but I guess I know what I am getting into when I bring a new one home (plant, not cat). I do make sure they aren’t poisonous to him - my daughter would have me by the neck if anything happened to get barncat-turned-pet.
  • My daughter (pictured below) is my favorite subject to photograph, especially since I found so many good spots round Overbrook to shoot. Of course. I mean, look at her.

What are some of YOUR fun things about you? Or your family? Let’s get to know each other better!

Lauren and I had such a hard time scheduling their engagement photos. There was weather and weird weekends, and then a car crash on their way to my house a week earlier!

Once we did get them shot, wow. It was a little chilly on the day we finally got to meet up, but the sun was fabulous. And Lauren looked so pretty! She’s been busy growing a person, and she didn’t look one wink tired. Yet. :)

I managed to get these edited in a flash for them because, well, they were pretty flawless.

I can’t wait for their wedding next year!

Laura is the sweetest. She found me out of sheer luck, and we had never met before the day that I shot their 2021 family portraits at their weekend house just outside of Burlingame. She and her husband were just so nice and trusting of me, and I always appreciate that. Family photos are a big deal.

The kids were styled to perfection, and they were so well-behaved and into their photos too! Let’s be honest - usually brothers and sisters at this age are throwing punches and insults, not posing for family photos with genuine smiles on their faces.

I loved that their family often takes their photos here - to watch how their kids grow and just enjoy their home away from home. Even their pup, Snickers, joined in a few photos!

Kayla C. | Heritage Park | Olathe, KS | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2021/11/kayla-c-heritage-park-olathe-ks-overbrook-ks-family-photographer

Kayla contacted me after hearing about my sessions through a mutual friend, Mindy (you’ve seen her on here before with her family). We met at Heritage Park in Olathe, a place I’ve shot at a few different times and always loved. But this spot. Well, it’s my favorite, hands down.

I mean, look at that light. We managed to get a session at just the right time to capture a beautiful sunset behind the trees

The girls were both a bit shy at first, but they warmed up right away, playing peek-a-boo and ring-around-the-rosy for me.

Soak in all this cuteness!

Jessica was the coach for Reagan’s softball team over the summer, and since our girls are the same age and so similar all around, we became fast friends. Our husbands are volunteer firefighters. We both work in the financial world (although different arenas). I feel like we clicked right away.

So when she asked me to take their family photos during my fall sessions, I was so excited.

Lilly, Addie, and Evie are all so different, and I think I was able to capture that too. Along with some photos of Charles and Jessica all by themselves. I love grabbing photos of moms and dads alone because - let’s face it - it is so hard to get photos of parents together throughout the year.

Enjoy the smiles!

One of my favorite things about shooting senior portraits for girls is that I am able to make them feel like they are having fun doing it. Most come to their session a little stressed, unsure of what to expect and hoping that their photos are beautiful. If I am being honest, I, as their photographer, am always feeling that at first too!

After some of the first shots at the Capitol Building in Topeka, I showed some of the photos on the back of my camera to Brilea and her mom and dad. And bingo, she loved them. I feel like it always puts my seniors at ease KNOWING that they are getting what they want.

The rest of Brilea’s session in downtown alleyways and at the Governor's Mansion trails were flawless, and dare I say some of my favorite ever.

The first thing she said when she got out of the car was “I have no idea what I’m doing.” Little did she know, she was going to rock the entire thing!

Morgan | Class of 2022 | Santa Fe Trail | Overbrook, KS Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2021/9/morgan-class-of-2022-santa-fe-trail-overbrook-ks-senior-photographer I have a soft spot for senior girls. They're in such a fun and exciting phase in their life, and my main goal is to give them photos that they are comfortable in and feel confident to share. I know that it can be hard sometimes.

When Amy, Morgan's mom, and I talked about her senior pictures, I knew it was going to be fun. I didn't expect to have SO many laughs though. Morgan is one of those girls who has a good head on her shoulders and isn't afraid to be herself.

She wanted a country feel, and when she mentioned the Wakarusa River where some family friends live, I was excited. I love locations that are one of a kind, and one that she will remember when she looks at her photos year later. Of course, since we are from a fairly small community, my husband knows these friends too - so it was more like a friend hangout session than a photoshoot.

Morgan's dad, Dave, restores cars, and she wanted some in front of them also. I don't know who was more scared to scratch them - her or me. :) Thankfully there were no mishaps, and the cars made it out as pristine as they were before.

We plan on doing another session, but we'll keep the details a secret until we actually shoot it. Let's just say, it is going to be awesome.

Tips for Preparing Your Husband For a Portrait Session | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2021/8/tips-for-preparing-your-husband-for-a-portrait-session-overbrook-ks-family-photographer For some of us, preparing our husbands for the family photo session is as exhausting as preparing the kids. If your husband is happy-go-lucky about photo day, that’s excellent. If you’re dealing with someone who’s reluctant, however, then here are some things you can do to help:

Especially if this is your first session together with the family now that the kids are mobile, let him know how the session will go and discuss your expectations. Also, if you have to bribe the kids, communicate this with him so he can help remind them of the bribery.

Warn him that the kids will probably be crazy or freak out and that he should prepare himself for that. Let him know that it will still be fine and to try not to get overwhelmed or worried.

Let him know that the more helpful he is in getting himself and the kids ready, the less stressed you will be and the less chance of an argument between you arising.

Remind him that the session is only one to two hours and then it will all be over. This way, he sees a light at the end of the tunnel and can stick it out.
If your husband is being difficult, bribe him to cooperate during the session as well. If it works for the kiddos, it may very well work for him!

And most importantly - remind him that you love him (and that he loves you, and that’s why he’s cooperating with this). Tell him how much you appreciate his support and cooperation in this, and how pleased you are going to be with the finished photos.

The Cook Family | Overbrook, KS | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2021/8/the-cook-family-overbrook-ks-overbrook-ks-family-photographer I have been putting myself out there more in the Overbrook area, especially since I found that sweet spot right in our front yard. I have done a few shoots for people in the area, but never really marketed myself, relying only on word-of-mouth. Then I posted in some Facebook groups, wrote a few blogs, asked for reviews and snagged a few new sessions.

This is one of my very favorite Overbrook shoots to date.

Amanda contacted me one evening after I posted about another session.

I knew her son wasn't the most enthused, but that is expected with any of the teenage boys I shoot, it seems. I hadn't yet met her girls, but I knew that if they are like Amanda, they would be pretty chill about the whole thing. I was right.

Ryan, their son, had *just* gotten a dirt bike that afternoon, so I knew he was even less than impressed to be shooting, but he was such a good sport.

We managed the heat and humidity and captured gorgeous shots of their family in about 45 minutes, walking all over our property.

Turns out Overbrook is just the spot for me.

How to Flatter Yourself in Photos | Carrie Sunday Photography | Overbrook, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2021/8/how-to-flatter-yourself-in-photos-carrie-sunday-photography-overbrook-ks-photographer

Sometimes it's hard to schedule those family photos because you don't feel quite yourself, quite thin enough or pretty enough or together enough. We, as a people, put so much pressure on ourselves to look perfect, especially in photos that people are going to look at for years to come, that we avoid it altogether. As a family photographer, I see it a lot.

I believe that every woman (and man too) should love their body, but let's face it, we are all guilty of being critical of ourselves at some point. I read this article on a while back that discusses using affirmations to boost self-confidence. Lucky for you, if you don't come in to your session feeling sky high about yourself, there are ways to get around it with posing too.

Hip bone to belly button.

I know how self conscious we can be about our weight or how "wide" we might appear. Turning toward your partner,  so that your belly button is close to his hip bone will create dimension and flatter your waistline with the angle. It also feels more relaxed than shooting straight on to your squared shoulders. There are so many ways to change it up too, so that it doesn't feel that you are posing exactly the same way for every location.

Arm out and away.

Whenever I am doing portraits, I ask my clients to have at least one shot from every pose with their hand on their hip. Not because I want them to look sassy (though I love a good sass), but because it slims the upper arm, unlike poses that make the arm appear wider because it is pressed against her body. I have learned that the arms are the first thing a woman criticizes about herself.

Bend those legs!

Straight legs are boring and flat and look uncomfortable too. Put a little bend in that knee. Pop that hip. Give you some curves, and it makes the photo 10x better, I promise. it may feel awkward (doesn't posing always feel a little weird anyway?) but it will make the end result looks fab.

Be below the camera.

Looking up thins your neck and elongates your eyelashes too. It's such a simple way to pose and get a beautiful portrait that will be timeless and classy. I always think that portraits shot from above are a little flirty too (must be the eyelash thing), which makes them so fun too!

The goal of a portrait session, whether alone, with a partner or your family, is to create images that you can be proud of and love. The better you feel about yourself combined with posing that you know will bring out the best parts of you can make all the difference.

Wear clothes you are comfortable in!

I know that we want to look good, but you leave that up to me. You need to feel good too. My advice is to wear something comfortable but flattering. Usually long, flowy dresses check all the boxes. I know a lot of moms who are not into dresses, but isn't a family photo shoot a perfect time to dress up and pamper yourself a little bit?  I think so!

What other tips do you have to help others feel good about themselves during a photo shoot?

Amber and Ethan | Pomona Lake | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2021/8/amber-and-ethan-pomona-lake-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Families like these are the reason that I love being a family photographer. Amber first contacted me to do their family photos when Jackson was tiny, about the size that Halle is now.

That's was about 2 years ago, and I am just now getting him to smile for me. I tried everything. Acting goofy, tickling, even ignoring him like I didn't even WANT a smile. He is a tough nut to crack, but now that we have gotten a few smiles and smirks for me, I think it'll be easy going forward. I may have just jinxed myself, but I'll have faith that we are gonna be good friends. :)

And little Halle. Isn't she adorable!? She did so well. Only a few tears & pouts caught on camera.

Keep your fingers crossed for more adorableness (like my new word?) in the future.

Reagan | Be A Wildflower | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2021/7/reagan-be-a-wildflower-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Sometimes we throw on a dress, curl her messy thick hair and head outside before the sun sets.

And these quick, relaxed sessions with my girl are usually my favorites of all time.

Here's to always having a sidekick willing to drop everything for a mini shoot in the front yard.

How to Deal with Moody Kids At A Photo Shoot: Don't. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/9/how-to-deal-moody-kids-at-a-photo-shoot I know that scheduling photo sessions can be stressful. It's not something most families do regularly so it can be a big deal, especially to those mommas who are really looking forward to grabbing moments to turn into prints to hang on their walls. There are a lot of things that go into it. Clothes, hair, MOODS. The thing that makes most moms worry is whether their kids are going to behave or not.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret I have learned: the more you push a kid to behave to get the photos you think you want, the more they are going to misbehave. It seems to happen every time.

It's okay if they are in a mood. It's okay. It's my job to try to grab their attention and ultimately, make them comfortable enough to get them to smile or laugh or give me their silliest face. Sometimes it works best if I am the one doing the heavy work with their mood, not you Mom and Dad.

Another secret: sometimes the kids that ARE in a mood take the most beautiful portraits. We really don't NEED a smile at all. I always ask my parents if they would rather have a fake smile or a picture that makes them really feel something.

Shake it off. Trust that it is going to go fine, and it actually makes the experience more enjoyable for you and your kids!

Rayli | Overbrook, KS | Overbrook, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/8/rayli One of my favorite shoots from this summer was Rayli. Her step-mom, Amanda, contacted me after school was cancelled, and the eighth-graders weren't allowed to have a graduation ceremony before they headed to high school. It was really disappointing for so many kids who missed so much from things that were literally out of their control.

For her birthday, Amanda surprised her with a girls day. She got new clothes, her hair and makeup done, and then a photo shoot all for her birthday! I thought that it was a really fun (and safe) way to make it special for her, even if it was different.

It turned out beautifully. If there is one thing that I LOVE about shooting for young ladies, especially high school girls, is that I have a chance to help them feel beautiful. Sometimes, that feeling doesn't come easy for young women, so I always reassure them that their photos are going to be great - and they always are.

I am nervous about her going back to school.

We're all making the best of a situation that none of us have ever been in before, and so to ease her nerves, and mine a little bit too, we had a fun little back to school session with the school buses.

Sass-a-frass!

Alice | One Year Old | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/8/alice-one-year-old-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Alice is the sweetest.

She is one of those babies that you wish you could bottle all of her enthusiasm and energy and laughter up for a long rainy day, when you need a bit of sunshine. She is adventurous and funny and, obviously, loves strawberries and her momma.

And now she is ONE. I have photographed Alice once before with her cousins, and I imagine we are going to see each other plenty over the next few years!

He didn't get newborn photos because Co-VID was just about in full swing by that time, and now that he is about 6 months old, it was time to get him in front of the camera!

He was so stinking sweet and funny the whole time. Well-behaved and smiley.

I get a whole session with his whole family in October, and I can only hope for half the smiles we got on this day.

Celena's dad is my cousin, and it is hard to think that his girls are old enough to be graduating!

This tomgirl got dressed up and looked beautiful for her session, and she even let her sister put makeup on her.

I warned her that it would feel weird to do some of the prompts and poses, but as usual, she was not disappointed!

The Sand Family | Family Session | Overbrook, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/8/the-sand-family-family-session-overbrook-kansas-family-photographer Since these photos were taken, Jake and Melissa had their third baby boy Joe! And let me assure you, he is the cutest thing ever.

But anyway, Jake's mom gifted this session to them before she knew she was pregnant, but it worked out beautifully for everyone. And if you've ever wondered if I ever realllllly wanted to shoot in a pasture with cows, the answer would be YES. I have seen some gorgeous photos of families in large pastures with their cows and always thought it was neat. So when Melissa mentioned she wanted the cows, I tried to hide my excitement. I really love when clients want to incorporate what makes them feel like home, and this is what the Sands do, who they are.

Being a senior photographer whose rep is this sweet is even better.

I have known Hailey for oh, probably, six years. When we moved here, I already knew her uncle from my job and became friends with her mom pretty soon after.  I took their first family photos that year, and here we are all this time later.

We will be shooting more throughout the year since she is my sole senior rep for Santa Fe Trail High School seniors this season (Thanks, Covid. NOT). She had an idea of what she wanted for this session, and then we just kinda winged it.

Sometimes not having a concrete plan turns out beautifully too.

Amber, Ethan and Jackson | Family Session | Overbrook, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/7/amber-ethan-and-jackson-family-session-overbrook-kansas-family-photographer I am so behind with blogging some of my recent sessions! With a new day job and working from home and everything else going on, it has definitely slipped to the back burner. But no more! I am working on catching up and hopefully getting back into a groove before crazy fall season starts.

I have taken Amber and Ethan's photos before, and when she contacted me about new updated photos, I couldn't wait. Jackson is just at that age where he is adventurous and curious - which usually translate into the cutest portraits.

Of course, when we met at the spot we would shoot near the lake, it was full of people. Like, full. I knew of another spot that didn't look quite as appealing, but we figured we would try it. I know Amber and Ethan were both probably thinking I was legit crazy when we pulled into what looked like a dried-out swamp. Even I wasn't sure how it was going to go because I knew it wasn't exactly their vision.

But, look at these photos. It was gorgeous. They were gorgeous. It turned out perfectly.

And I think I earned their trust as a photographer, which for me, is a big thing. Enjoy!

Warning : We're Gonna Get Weird https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/5/warning-were-gonna-get-weird

If you've ever had me as a photographer, you know I talk baby talk. I chase toddlers (not to be scary, I swear). I make silly faces and make bad jokes that teenagers cringe at. I show them how to do poses that feel so awkward that they think I am bonkers.

At almost every single photo shoot, I can make one promise. We're gonna get weird. You can almost count on me saying, "I know it feels super weird, but it's gonna look great!" And I haven't had a client tell me any  different yet.

I do what I have to to get those smiles and laughs and weird questioning looks that 3-year-olds often give me. It's worth it, and I don't mind if people think I'm a little goofy. If we're being honest, that's probably true anyway.

When families come to me and see me be totally relatable and goofy, I feel like it opens things up, and they feel comfortable more easily. Maybe my clients can attest to whether that is true for them, but I feel it from my side.

Are you nervous when you show up to shoot your family portraits? Or senior portraits? Any tips you can give ME to make the situation more comfortable for YOU?? Let me know your thoughts!

Including Your Pet | Carrie L. Sunday Photography | Overbrook, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/2/including-your-pet-carrie-l-sunday-photography-overbrook-ks-photographer If you are planning on bringing a pet to your session, I am all for it! Since my sessions are all shot outside, it gives us a great opportunity to include them. They are a part of your family too! I love furry friends and am always pleased to add them into your sessions! Sometimes they can get hyper or jumpy, but we can make it work. Here are some things you should remember to bring to ensure everything goes smoothly:

  1. A leash. This will help you keep your pet near to you and where you want him or her for photos. (They aren’t just for dogs, you know. I've seen cats with leashes too!)
  2. A friend. Having someone come with you specifically to take care of your pet is ideal, but not a requirement. This will help so that your pet is not running around all over the place or alone in the car, should you wish to take some photos without them.
  3. Treats. Treats are great bribery for your animal. It will help keep your pet still and focused on the camera. It's so funny how bribery works with dogs/cats and kids.
  4. A favorite toy. The noisier the better. This is also a great tool to help keep your pet’s attention on me. We can also use it for a fun game and get some fun interaction shots.

How to Get Those Real Smiles | Carrie L. Sunday Photography | Northeast Kansas Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/2/how-to-get-those-real-smiles-carrie-l-sunday-photography-northeast-kansas-photographer Kids are completely unpredictable. They can be so adorable and easy going and laughing uncontrollably one minute, and the next minute, turn that charm off completely. They will typically smile for you all day long until you put them in front of a camera, then they freeze up like a deer in headlights. We want to avoid the gritted teeth and bug-eyed forced smiles during our session.

Here are some things you can do:

  1. Make a list of things that your child thinks are funny and send it to us prior to the session. This way, we can be prepared and add these things into our bag of tricks.
  2. Also give us a list of icebreakers for your child. Tell us the kinds of shows they watch, music they listen to, friends’ names, favorite story, etc. This will give us something to talk to them about, and will help them to forget that they are in front of the camera.
  3. Practice phrases at home to see which ones that evoke the best smiles from your child. (Please, oh please, avoid “Say cheese!” unless that really works for you child. It always give us TOO MUCH cheese.)
  4. Try out a couple of jokes with them. During the session, we can ask them to tell us a joke and this will typically loosen them up as they tell it to us.
  5. If there is a song that your child loves, load it up to your phone and bring it along with you, or be prepared to sing it for them during the session.
  6. Prepare a bribe and show it to them, or remind them of it, during the session. A trip to the zoo or the park or an ice cream date. Whatever works.

Alley | Senior | Santa Fe Trail High School | Class of 2020 https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2020/1/alley-senior-santa-fe-trail-high-school-class-of-2020 Alley's mom, Ashlee, and I have known each other since we were 5. Alley is the spitting image of Ashlee. No joke; she looks exactly like her. She's gorgeous. I mean check out those eyes and those cheekbones! And she is funny yet reserved. It was a great afternoon with them both.

I had worked with her dad for almost 10 years when I needed a senior model for 2020, and of course, she was my first pick. She did not disappoint.

She is full of ideas, and when she told me she wanted a quick shoot in each season instead of just 2 full time sessions, I was all in. Throw in her prom dress into each season, and Kenzie was a magic Overbrook senior.

We started in her junior year actually, in the snow on one of the coldest days of 2019. It could not have been more beautiful. And that red prom dress was phenomenal against that stark white snow. It is still one of my most liked and talked about posts ever.

Then spring rolled around, and we shot on the very flooded gravel road that runs between our homes. Again, it was perfect.

For summer, we went to the capitol building then headed to Lake Shawnee in Topeka and played on the docks. Sunshine all the way!

For fall, we went to South Park in Lawrence then hit Mass street.

Each session was so different, yet so Kenzie. Enjoy!

Owen | West Franklin High School | Pomona, KS | Class of 2020 https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/12/owen-west-franklin-high-school-pomona-ks-class-of-2020 When we moved to Overbrook, in the country, one of my favorite things (still is) is that we can't see any of our neighbors' houses. That might sound totally crazy to some people, but it is true. It's quiet and peaceful. Owen and his family just happen to be one of the closest neighbors that we have. Once in a while you'll see the boys on their 4-wheelers, but they are quiet, like us (except when it's RZR race season and our house becomes a wave of movement).

Owen is so funny. Half of the session was laughing (mostly at myself), and him trying to figure out what to do with his hands. It's a senior guy thing. :) Here's to a great rest of the year for him!

The Morris Family | Overbrook, KS | Family Session | Overbrook, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/10/the-morris-family-overbrook-ks-family-session-overbrook-ks-photographer Emily booked her session with me before either of us realized that we saw each other multiple times at my daughter’s school! It’s a small world sometimes!

When she and her husband and their little boy, Cylas, came to do their session in our front field of our house, I knew it was going to be a good one. Cylas was immediately so cheerful and curious about me, which seems to be the norm among little boys. My wheelchair is usually an overgrown remote control car to them.

Anyway, in the 15 minutes that we shot, we got so many photos that I know Emily loves.

And that’s all I want from any session, but especially this one, because it was their first session in a few years. Here’s to seeing them again soon!

Carmel Catholic High School https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/8/kelsie-senior-2020-wichita-ks-kapaun-mt-carmel-catholic-high-school I have known Kelsie and her family for a few years now. Her mother, Jenny, is a fellow Ms Wheelchair Kansas alum and a dear friend. When I first met Kelsie, she was much younger and shorter. Her little sister, Karlie, was too. Now they both tower over me and are as beautiful as can be.

I made the trip to Wichita for this shoot, and I always love finding new places to photograph. The Keeper of the Plains was a first for me, and I just love the way that the photos turned out.

After we trekked around the park at the Keeper for a bit, we made our way down to Douglas Street and spent some time finding little gems to use as backdrops also.

This little art alleyway was such a unique place, and I feel like it suited Kelsie’s personality well. Bubbly and bright with a lot of spectacular light.

I can't wait to see where she goes in the next few years!

Dear Reagan, https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/8/dear-reagan Dear Reagan,

Summer is almost over & here we are, looking for school clothes and making sure your sleep schedule is working. Next week, we start a whole new routine. You are going to have so much fun in kindergarten. You love to learn, and you are curious about things that most kids probably wouldn’t be. The other night, we had a whole conversation about daytime and nighttime at home and in China & how they are opposites. You were so fascinated. I love watching you absorb information. Here's to our next big adventure.

5 Tips to Prepare Your Kids for a Photo Session https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/7/5-Tips-to-Prepare-Your-Kids-for-a-Photo-Session I have said it before, and I'll say it again. And probably will again and again and again in the future, but portrait sessions can be stressful.  Clients are paying good, hard-earned money for photos that they want to be perfect. The outfits, the makeup, the kids' clothes, the location. It's a big deal, especially for moms who worry that their child will misbehave or get shy or start screaming their head off in the middle of the first shot.  Let me just say it for those moms-sometimes you can do everything in the world, bribe them with the moon and all the stars in the sky, and they're still going to make it hard. That's what kids do sometimes. It doesn't mean that we can't get at least a few shots that will make you happy.

I once had a client who had a mini session on a chilly April morning. She wanted photos with her two children for Mother's Day, and since it was growing close, we decided to go ahead with it. Her little boy, then 5 years old, was not having it. He would not smile for me, and he definitely wouldn't laugh no matter how big of a fool I made of myself. Nothing worked. I talked to her about a reshoot when it was warmer if I wasn't happy with the images.

But later, when I was culling images, I found three of him alone that I knew needed to be included for her on top of almost 35 other great images. She later wrote me and said that one of those three was her absolute favorite from the whole shoot. I caught him at just the right time to get him looking at the camera. There was no smile, but she said that it was him perfectly, just how he always is.

So don't assume that just because they are not behaving the way you want that the photos won't be great. Even bad moods and cranky kids need to be documented!

Here are a few tips that could keep the crankiness at bay for at least our hour though!

1. Feed them
As adults, we get hangry. If you have a kid, you know that hangry can go from zero to ten really quickly. Don't stuff them so that they are groggy, but just enough to keep them satisfied.

2. Give them a nap.
If they regularly take a nap, make sure you don't skip it. Photographers are prrreeeeetttty understanding about it. My own daughter has a hard time figuring out what tv show she wants to watch, let alone be happy and content in front of a lady with a camera. If they are rested, they are more apt to participate and not try to hide their face in your armpit.

3. Bring a favorite toy or blanket, etc.
We can include the toy or blanket in a few photos, just to get your kiddo comfortable, then take it out. I know that most parents don't want a well-worn blanket or teddy in their family photos, but in twenty years, you probably aren't going to be worried about that, rather than how sweet and innocent and calm your little man or lady was for that photo. Promise me, let them have it for at least a few.

4. Let them laugh and play.
I try to schedule family portrait sessions for an hour. We do NOT shoot for that full hour. We really don't need to, if part of that time is spent getting everyone comfortable and happy and letting the kids get out their nervous energy. It is worth it to let them be themselves around your photographer so that when it is go time, they are ready.

5. Stop overthinking it!
I know, momma, that you have these images in your head that you want. Perfect photos of your darlings, but let me tell you, photographers are professionals for a reason. They will capture your children in their true essence and give you better photos than you imagined. Trust your photographer and don't be too set on getting those exact Pinterest photos.

Courtney | Senior 2020 | Lawrence, KS | Lawrence, KS Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/7/courtney-senior-2020-lawrence-ks-lawrence-ks-senior-photographer A big part of my business is hinged on word of mouth referrals. My clients telling their friends and family and recommending me. I am so thankful.

So when Jill called me about getting Courtney’s senior portraits done, I wasn’t too surprised. Her sister Kelley always sends her family and friends to me, and I am forever grateful.

Courtney is here for the summer and will return to England to start her last year of high school. She wanted to make sure that she got to do senior portraits in Lawrence before she left. A quiet morning at South Park and on Mass Street was perfect for her session. We managed to find deserted alleyways that worked so well for her and her quiet and sweet demeanor.

Capturing Our Summer - Summer Bucket List https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/6/capturing-your-summer If you're like me, you need a list for everything. Like, everything.  I always make a list of fun things to do every season. It's a great way for me to remind myself to be present and do the things that make life so fun with Reagan. Also, I include things that I want but always let fall by the wayside for other things.

It also reminds me to document our adventures. It might seem like just another afternoon of playing or swimming or whatever it is, but it won't be lost to memory if I can capture the little moments.

I keep a copy of it right on my phone and share occasionally on social media. We checked off the first one this week with a trip to the Kansas City zoo for Reagan's birthday.

What are some of your bucket list items this summer?

5 Tips on Choosing Clothes for Your Session https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/6/tips-on-clothing-choices The number one question I always get asked is “What should we wear?” It’s what is on the forefront of most moms’ minds when they book a session right behind “Are the kids gonna behave?” Styling a session doesn’t have to be hard or complicated, but it is important. Here are a few tips!

1.         Wear Something Comfortable

If you are uncomfortable, it shows. On your face, in your eyes, in the way you hold yourself. This goes for kids too. Let them wear something that they won’t want to rip off halfway through.

2.       Plan Layers

Weather can be unpredictable in Kansas. We all know that one minute it could be beautiful outside, and half an hour later, it is pouring rain and windy. Since my shoots are booked pretty far in advance, it could be tricky to know what the temperature will be. My biggest advice for this is to plan layers. Grab a sweater or scarf that coordinates with your outfit. It will help you from rushing around at the last minute if it suddenly is 20 degree cooler than we originally thought it would be.

3.       Think classic and simple.

Solid colors are my favorite because they are not distracting from you in the photos. But simple prints are gorgeous too, especially in family shoots where it can set everyone apart. Just don’t go overboard. If you are looking for timeless, classy looking family portraits, you want your outfits to coordinate but not be too matchy-matchy.

And as much as your kiddo loves that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle t-shirt, persuade him to wear something different. You’ll thank yourself later, I promise.

4.       Feel confident.

Confidence shows in your face when taking photos, even when you might be nervous as heck. Finding clothes that make you feel good about yourself can be key. Or even an accessory that really shows off our eyes. Or whatever it is. Women especially, are so hard on themselves, and finding that something that gives you a little sass can mean the difference between ordinary photos and beautiful photos that show you at your best. But remember tip 1. Be comfortable too.

5.       Show us your talents/hobbies/sports.

This one is for seniors. While family sessions usually only have one outfit, seniors go through a few. The above tips go for seniors also, but this one is especially for them. What do you like? What sports do you play? How would people describe you? Talk with your photographer, and incorporate as much of your personality into your photos.

Trust your photographer. Be open to asking if you need help picking out outfits for your family. I promise that they want you to look as good as you do!

Before and After | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/6/before-and-after-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Sometimes you get a client who needs very little direction or styling or posing, and all that needs to be adjusted are a little exposure and contrast. That was my luck with Jordyn. So easy and flawless.

I try to shoot a little dark (underexposed) and then lighten in editing. I also added some warmth and contrast so that her beautiful hair would pop.

Here's to sessions in random parking lots.

52 Weeks Mid-Year Check In | Topeka, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/5/52-weeks-mid-year-check-in-topeka-kansas-family-photographer Okay I am going to admit that I have gotten a bit off course with my 52 Weeks Project. I am currently 2 weeks behind! But I am catching up and should be back on schedule this weekend.

It's hard with everything else going on to remember to pull my camera out at those mundane moments that I want to capture.

Til I get caught up, enjoy this crazy girl's face.

They were actually married in Vegas a few weeks before this beautiful reception, and you can see that they are still floating from their big day.

Sometimes I go into shoots where I don't know anyone & feel a little awkward, but their families were both so helpful and accommodating and friendly. It felt like they had known me for years, and that is the best ever.

And Baby Jay crashed the party! Jennifer pulled off a heck of a surprise for all the huge KU fans that she loves.

Kenzie | Santa Fe Trail High School Senior 2020 | Overbrook, Kansas https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/5/kenzie-santa-fe-trail-high-school-senior-2020-overbrook-kansas I have worked with Kenzie’s dad for almost 10 years so I have watched her grow from a little kid to an amazingly persistent and confident young woman. She turned 17 recently, and I tried to think back and remember if I ever had that type of confidence. Probably not, so it is extra heart-warming to know that she is going to be alright in this world with such a great attitude.

They live not far from us too – so when the roads flooded from the gazillion gallons of rain that it feels spring had dumped on us already this year, she called me to ask about doing her spring senior session in the flood waters on our main road. Um, yeah!!

Kenzie is not a girl who wants the typical senior photos at a park or downtown between large buildings that engulf her. She has really good, creative and fun ideas. You might remember her first senior session that was in the snow and 10 degree weather in her beautiful red prom dress.

I can hardly wait to round out her senior year next year with her summer and fall sessions! You guys will be in for a treat!

5 Things That Moms Worry About When Booking A Photo Session https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/4/5-things-that-moms-worry-about-when-booking-a-photo-session Let’s face it – rarely are dads booking family photos for their wife and kids. It’s the moms who do that sort of thing. I know moms who want it done every year, and I know moms who put it off but eventually get that call made to schedule.

There are a few things that both of these types of moms think about though. Let’s discuss so that the next time you want to book a photo session, your mind can be at ease.

What will we wear?

I try to advise my clients that first, you want to be comfortable. Your kids should be comfortable. It really reflects in photos sometimes if clothes are too stiff or itchy or tight.

Coordinate colors, but don’t be too matchy matchy.

Try mixing solid colors with simple patterns.  No graphic tees, unless you have a very specific type of look you are going for. In twenty years, are you going to love that your kid wore a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle t-shirt? Probably not.

Lastly, don’t let your clothes distract you from the feeling of the session.  Clothing is important, of course, but the goal of each session is to capture your family’s love, not focus on your brand new dress or your little guy’s new shoes.

Will my kids behave? What if they don’t?

Guess what. Kids sometimes misbehave. It happens more than you think at sessions, and guess what else? I always manage to get good photos of them! Let me worry about their cooperation – and you worry about loving on them. I got it.

Will my HUSBAND behave?

Husbands misbehaving also happens sometimes, believe it or not. Fellas, it’s an hour of your life to give your wife what she wants. To give your kids family photos to hang on to after you’re gone. Suck it up and get it done. And give me a smile, for crying out loud.

What if the weather is bad?

We reschedule. I am booked out for months ahead of time sometimes, and there is no predicting the weather.  There’s ALWAYS a chance that it will be cold or rainy or snowy, but we just move things around and schedule for a different day or time. Don't stress about it - we will make this happen one way or the other.

What if I hate the way I look?

This one is a big one. Unfortunately, I have never met a mom who doesn’t have at least some insecurity. But, I try to ask my moms up front what it is. It’s a powerful thing to say it out loud and then allow me to reassure you that – we got this. We are going to get beautiful photos of you and your family.  We are going to make this fun, and you won’t even be thinking about it.

I am sure there are a dozen other things that are worrisome because that’s what we do as moms. Worry. These are five of the big ones.

Just remember – trust your photographer. Take their advice. And let them make you feel beautiful.

Reagan | Week 13 | 52 Weeks | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/4/reagan-week-13-52-weeks-topeka-ks-family-photographer We try new things on weekends to keep ourselves busy and minds working creatively. This past weekend was making sure that she didn't want to spend all her time on an iPad.

So we watercolored and then glued alphabet pasta onto the paper. Kids are so simple. They just want your time and attention, a piece of paper and some macaroni. That's it. Being a parent is the hardest thing ever, but being if you're gonna be one, you might as well try to be good at it.

Missing Summer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/3/missing-summer Is anyone else missing warm weather and evening sunshine and humidity?

Maybe I am the only one, but I cannot hardly wait. With spring right around the corner, I am craving green trees and grass. And iced coffee. And light jackets. And sun-kissed skin on my little girl's cheeks. Winter felt eternal, but slowly, the light is showing at the end of the tunnel!

Until then, here are some of my favorites to hold me over until the 90 degree weather hits.

When I saw it I immediately thought " "Dannnng that would look good in the snow." Turns out that it was even more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Kansas has had so much snow this year - pretty much snowing at least one day a week for the past few weeks - and I have made no secret that I am tired of it. The dark and gloom of snow sneaks up pretty quick after the initial beautiful blanket part. It turns to mud & muck. Ugh. But that red dress changed my mind for a little while.

Thankfully, we did this the day after a really good snowfall, and it was still untouched except for where we had footprints and tire tracks. It was 20 degrees and worth every shiver.

My Favorite Workspaces | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/1/my-favorite-workspaces-topeka-ks-family-photographer

If there is one thing I have learned about being  a business owner, it is that self-discipline is one of the biggest traits. It’s one of those things that needs flexed all the time to make it strong. For me sometimes the best way to really hunker down and get batch-working or big projects done is to change my scenery. Not that I can’t get work done at home, in my home office, but there can be a lot of distractions also. Those dishes need done. The floor needs vacuumed. The list is never-ending, and it’s not conducive to a real focused work session for me all the time.

So occasionally, you’ll find me at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library blogging away or scheduling social media posts for the following three months all in one afternoon. Sometimes, I’ll grab a coffee at Blackbird Café and sit, earbuds in, world out. A change of environment really does my bossbabe heart well.

Creativity often comes from such planning and work sessions too.  Last year, I offered Unicorn sessions. The year before it was Lace, Pearls & Little Girls. This year I am dreaming up something new. This off season, when it too cold to barely breathe outside, let alone shoot an entire session, is good for prepping for the seasons that will be busy & make my head spin.

What are some of your favorite places to work? Places that really let you focus? I’m always up for new places to try.

Sometimes the photos that have the most feeling are not of someone's face. Our crumby counter, her little belly, my constantly-used pink water bottle. This is home.

2019 is going to be a big one | Carrie L. Sunday Photography | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2019/1/2019-is-going-to-be-a-big-one-carrie-l-sunday-photography-topeka-ks-photographer Another year is here, guys.

And I am ready.

I have grown so much in 2018, had the busiest year yet in my business, and truthfully I am ready to crush it this coming year.

You’ll notice that pricing is going up this year, but believe me, it is worth it for me to give you a great and meaningful experience and deliver the images and products that YOU all have asked for. I am still figuring this whole being-a-business-owner thing out, but I am thankful that you—my clients and friends—have helped me through it.

One of my big intentions for this year are to really hone in on my client experience. I want you all to feel welcomed and comfortable about all aspects of your time with me, before, during and after the shoot! I want you to feel okay about asking questions. As a photographer, there are things that I probably assume clients might already know that they probably don’t—like that Walgreens is not a professional lab. And I want to help guide you so that you can receive the very best. I want you to ask me those things.

I want to spend time getting to know you and your kids and their likes and dislikes. I will probably be asking you questions too—because the more I know about your family, the better I can portray your relationship through the camera.

It’s going to be a great 2019. Let’s get it!

Dear Reagan, https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/12/dear-reagan I’ve been slacking a little bit on these letters, haven’t I? I am sorry I have been working so much, but thankfully we are done with the big stuff for this year at work. I’m all yours little lady!

This Christmas will be the best one yet. You are thoroughly enthralled in all things Santa and magic and cheer and glitter. Always glitter. I cannot wait to see your face on Christmas morning when you open your gifts.  I remember when I was a kid, how excited I was to know that Santa brought so much stuff that I loved, that I didn’t even ask for. I hope we have done the same for you. I think I am far more excited about your “big gift” than you will be at first.

I love your leadership, even when it gets you into sticky situations at school. I love how caring you are, always looking out for others and concerned for them. And even though you are a fierce little thing, I love that you argue for what you feel/believe is right. I love that you call peppermint “spicy” and call me Mommy still. I love, love, love that you love learning. You can sit for hours tracing letters and sounding them out. You remind me of me in that way. The stubbornness, that is all your dad!

Color Versus Black & White | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/12/color-versus-black-white I never can pick between color and black and white photos. I tend to love both for different reasons, usually the way they resonate emotion.

I was going through photos to print for my big blank wall in my office, and I need help.

Color or black and white?

The Sowers Family | Family Session | Topeka, Kansas Family Photographer | Ted Ensley Gardens https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/11/the-sowers-family-family-session-topeka-kansas-family-photographer-ted-ensley-gardens When we first moved to Overbrook, I didn't know many people. The few I did know were from my day job, and since we live south of town, it was not like we could just walk around and meet people. But we did attend community events, and Greg joined the volunteer fire department, which helped immerse us as a family into the community too. We have met and become friends with great people.

Madison is one of those people. I can't even remember the first time we actually met. Probably through Greg and Derrick, her husband, because they are in the same line of work. But Madison is a gem. She's sweet and reliable. and here's a big one--I would trust her with my kid. Yep, her name is on my very short list of people I trust with Reagan.

We met at Ted Ensley Gardens one afternoon in October, and their family was so fun. The kids got in on some of the fun prompts, and Natalie threw out some ideas of her own too. I love it when the kids show real interest in having fun and getting family photos.

Now, to pick which ones to print big and put in their new home!

Olivia | South Park | Lawrence, Kansas Portrait Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/11/olivia-south-park-lawrence-kansas-portrait-photographer Karen and I had been planning Olivia's fall photos for quite some time. When the day came, Karen texted me to ask if Reagan, my daughter, might be with me. Unfortunately, she was with my mom that day because I had other shoots just before Olivia's. But Karen managed a little white lie to Olivia. When they pulled up to South Park in Lawrence, Karen told me Olivia wasn't too happy with her.

She wouldn't get out of the car. No Reagan, no pictures. Eventually, Karen coaxed her out with the promise of a play date.

This is the third year that I have done her fall photos, and I looked back the other day at our 2016 photos. She was so small! And had long hair! it amazing to watch kids grow through photos.

I can only imagine what changes next year's will bring.

Robby | Topeka West High School Class of 2019 | Topeka, KS Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/11/robby-topeka-west-high-school-class-of-2019-topeka-ks-senior-photographer I've known Robby's dad for quite a while and did his older brother, Andy's senior photos last year. It is amazing to me that brothers, only a year or so apart, could have such different personalities.

Robby knew that he wanted some sort of railroad tracks in his photos, and since the law doesn't allow us to actually shoot ON the tracks (major safety issue that has been enforced recently), we did the next best thing and went to the Amtrack station in downtown Topeka. It was definitely a different vibe, and I think that Robby, and his mom Laura were pleasantly surprised that it was unique to him.

Then we downtown for a photo in front of the Capitol building and finally to NOTO. It fit right with Robby's personality, and we even found a few gems that were new to Robby and Laura.

Here's to 2019 seniors!

Gabe | Senior 2019 | Topeka, KS Senior Photographer | Second Session https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/11/gabe-senior-2019-topeka-ks-senior-photographer-second-session Gabe brought the family along for his second senior session, and I don't know who was more thrilled: me or his mom. Janice is one of those people who is instant friends with anyone she meets, and I think it runs a little bit in her bloodline. Her sister, Katie, is the same. They are just a super helpful, loving, close-knit family.

Eden, Gabe's younger sister, is just as pretty as ever, and again, hilarious. I don't meet many kids with such a good sense of humor.

Anyway, we met at Ted Ensley Gardens in Topeka. It's one of my favorite places because when the sun hits just right, it pops the color beautifully. You'll see, just look at these.

Trendy (I mean, teal hair!) and sweet and still a little bit shy.

We met in downtown Topeka to shoot her senior pictures, and it fit just about everything I had envisioned for her. The black stairway was the main reason I wanted to go there, but the alleyways are my new favorites. Thankfully it wasn't too crazy cold, and we were able to get a ton of shots. Her sister Jayme, got in a few too!

We went to Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee next, and Jordyn wore the cutest fall outfit ever. That mustard sweater was perfect. Ted Ensley is one of my favorite places to shoot because there are so many different spots to shoot that look so different from one another. I think you'll like them in the photos below too.

Before and After | Cedar Lake | Olathe, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/10/before-and-after-topeka-ks-family-photographer I am someone who has always enjoyed the process. Sometimes it is so amazing to see what has come out of the camera versus what is shown as a final product.

I tend to underexpose most of my images in camera, mostly because for me, it is easier to lighten a dark-ish image than darken a super bright one. I did the same for Brittany and Ryan's couple/family session at Cedar Lake in Olathe.

Here is one of my favorite shots. Before and after editing.

Last 90 days! | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/10/last-90-days   I am going to admit it right here. Sometimes this business is hard. Not because the work is hard, but because it is hard to find the motivation to do ALL THE THINGS after a day that was already filled up with work.

Lately, I was just feeling like I was giving half of myself to everything. My day job, being a mom, this photography business, my clients, communication, being a good wife. I was stretched too thin, and usually when that happens, I just give up.

Then I listened to Rachel Hollis’ podcast about the #last90days Challenge. Basically it’s about putting as much effort and enthusiasm into the last 90 days of the year as I do the first 90 days. You can read more at this link. I always tend to be onto the next thing, and I caught myself quiet frequently making plans for 2019, just waiting for January to start. And that’s not helping me or my life or my business in any way.

Here’s to the last 90 days, or 80, whatever is left of 2018!

Gabe | 2019 Senior | NOTO | Topeka, KS Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/10/gabe-2019-senior-noto-topeka-ks-senior-photographer I hadn’t met Gabe before the evening of his senior shoot. I had met with his mom, Janice, a few months earlier to go over how everything works, but in my experience, senior guys are about 10% excited about senior photos. When I met them in NOTO though, I knew it would be good.

He has that very serious, very intelligent look about him, and all of his photos came out so great. I am not sure how his mom is going to pick her favorite. And his little sister, Eden, is a hoot.

We have another session scheduled for next week to finish out his senior experience, and I am excited. I might even be able to get lots of smiles out of him this time too.

Brittany & Ryan | Couples Session | Cedar Lake | Olathe, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/10/brittany-ryan-couples-session-cedar-lake-olathe-ks-photographer Last year, Brittany contacted me to schedule family photos for her and Ryan's families. My husband has been friends with Ryan and his brother, Rob, for years and years. Unfortunately, I was booked and couldn't make it happen for them even though I reallllllly wanted to.

This year, Brittany made sure she booked before crazy-busy-fall-portrait season hit for her little family. Ryan, Molly, and Tex came along, and even though it was an early morning session at Cedar Lake in Olathe, KS, it was fun and energetic for all of us. Especially after the dogs had their shining moments in front of the camera and ran off to get dirty in the water.

Ryan and Brittany are one of those couples that always seems to be laughing. Ryan is quiet, and Brittany is unapologetically just herself, and I love that about her. I knew she and Ryan would be perfect to test some of my new and quirky prompts on! And they were worked perfectly. These may be some of my favorite couples photos I have ever had the pleasure of shooting. And that light. That is 8am fall morning light. Isn't it gorgeous?!

Alicia and Marik | Topeka, KS | Ted Ensley Gardens | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/10/alicia-and-marik-topeka-ks-ted-ensley-gardens-topeka-ks-family-photographer I first met Alicia and her son Marik last year when he was just turning one. He wasn’t even walking yet, but boy could he move quick on the grass. He was the first baby who wasn’t a fan of his cake smash!

Now Marik is turning two, and Alicia wanted to get birthday photos done again. He is a little harder to keep up with this time around, but he is still as sweet as ever. And he takes the best photos without even knowing it. I really wish we could have seen the fish in the newly renovated pond at Ted Ensley Gardens, but the water was a little too murky. Maybe next time.

With my transition into shooting photos with more movement and feeling and connection, Alicia and Marik did not disappoint. Even though she hadn’t really planned on being in so many of his shots, the photos of Alicia took with Marik are some of my favorite. You can just see the love there. These two are a team.

I can’t wait until next year to see how much he has grown again!

Check out his last session here! Look how little he was!

Like, a really long time.

When her mom contacted me about senior photos months ago, I knew it was going to be a good time and that she would be beautiful. Turns out I was right on both accounts. I mean, just look at her.

She had her hair and makeup done as a part of her package, and you would never know this girly girl is also a tomboy. She is a enthusiastic softball player and has sass for days.

We are scheduling a night to get her in her softball uniform and on the field so be on the lookout for that.

Courtney & Corey | Lake Shawnee | Ted Ensley Gardens | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/8/courtney-corey-lake-shawnee-ted-ensley-gardens-topeka-ks-family-photographer Quite a bit of my new business relies on referrals from my current clients who tell their friends about me, who then tell their friends. When my friend Matt texted me that he told his friend Courtney about me when she needed a family photographer in Topeka, I immediately reached out. Any friend of Matt's is (probably) a friend of mine.

I met Courtney and Corey and their kids Lane and Addison at Ted Ensley Gardens on very pretty, warm Saturday afternoon.  Right away, I knew Addison, the shy one of the bunch, would be the hardest to crack, but we got there eventually. Her blonde hair and beautiful eyes made her blue dress pop so I couldn't help but snap 5 million photos of her.

And Lane. He tried to be shy and coy at first, but by the end of the session, he was jumping off of big rocks and dabbing mid-air.

As a photographer, sometimes it's hard to send out sneak peeks or full galleries and wonder if the clients will fall in love like we hope they do.  When Courtney immediately shared her photos, I breathed a sigh of relief. I always want the photos to be loved. I really think the ones below are.

The Oakman Family | Ted Ensley Gardens | Topeka, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/8/the-oakman-family-ted-ensley-gardens-topeka-kansas-family-photographer Taylor contacted me so that her family could get a extended family session in before she, her  husband Cody, and their sweet kids made their way to Texas for a new adventure and job.

We met on a Saturday afternoon at Ted Ensley Gardens in Topeka, and even though the kids were only half enthused, we made it happen!

Family sessions, especially the ones that don't quite go as planned, are my favorite.  Because when kids are running around, screaming, and doing their thing, it is so real. I know parents think their kids are just being difficult, but it's fine. I promise, it's fine.

It will make for a funny story in 20 years when you want to embarrass them in front of their boyfriend or girlfriend. Stack those stories up, and learn to love the times that don't quite seem perfect.

The Jantzen Family | Rocking V Ranch | Topeka, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/8/the-jantzen-family-rocking-v-ranch-topeka-kansas-family-photographer I have known Cory for years. He was first ever manager at my first ever job when I was 16, and we always got along well. He was far more laid back than the others, which always made him my favorite. I remember the day he and Katrina got married. I was working, but they came by just before the reception.

Now 15 years later, I am taking their family photos. Life is funny like that.

I met Cory, Katrina and their daughter, Kyra, at the Rocking V Ranch where Kyra's horse, Penny, is boarded. It's only the second time I have been asked to do photos with a horse, and it was fun again. I am looking forward to more!

Tips for Your Maternity Session | Carrie L. Sunday Photography | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/8/when-to-take-your-maternity-photos-topeka-ks-photographer Pregnancy is a very personal thing. You are giving up your body for 9 months to grow this little person, and it is the most selfless thing a mother does. Some women hate pregnancy. Some women love it, and it suits them so well that they would be pregnant all the time. I was in the first category. Pregnancy was hard on me, and I pretty much felt like crap the entire time. Maternity photos were the very last thing on my mind during any moment of my time growing that little booger Reagan.

But for some women, maternity photos are one of the first ways that they really own their belly and its fullness. Below are a few tips for having a great maternity session!

Take them between 7 and 8 months.

This is usually the prime time because your belly is full and swollen, but not SO big that it is uncomfortable or hard for you to maneuver around. Some women can wait until into the ninth month, but it might not be worth it to chance having a super uncomfortable and miserable time taking photos.

Wear clothes/dresses/gowns that you are comfortable with and feel beautiful in.

You want to feel beautiful for your photos. And your photographer is going to show you that are with the photos. Wearing a gown that makes you enjoy your body and your belly will show all across your photos, I promise. Try a few. Pick the one that most suits you and go with it.

Make your belly the center of focus. Choose a simple location without distractions.

This baby is about to be your whole world, so why not get a jump start and make the belly the whole attraction. Talk with your photographer about choosing a simple location that won’t take away attention in the photos from you and the reason you are there in the first place. Make the belly the star of the show. If you are shooting with your significant other, it will also help showcase the relationship you two have.

Communicate with your photographer.

Be open to what you are comfortable with and what you are not. I promise that if your photographer is a woman who has ever been pregnant, she will understand. And if you have a male photographer, he maybe watched his girlfriend or wife go through it too. Don’t feel forced to pose a certain way if you are physically not into it.

Relax.

I know it’s hard, and people are probably telling you all the time to enjoy the time you have left being pregnant and relax and “Oh, just wait.” This shoot should be really special to you (obviously you want to document it), and nerves might cause you to feel stiff. Breathe it out, girlfriend. Wiggle, jiggle, whatever you gotta do. Tell yourself that your photographer is going to capture perfect images for you. It is going to be fine. Just fine.

Before and After | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/8/before-and-after-topeka-ks-family-photographer It's always fun to see what happens behind the scenes on a photo shoot. What a client sees versus what a photographer sees.

Here is a fun one.

We shot this session in Topeka at the Gage Park rose garden a few days before her fourth birthday. And let me just say that it is not easy trying to get great photos of your own kid sometimes. She really wasn't into this shoot no matter how cute I knew it could be. Thankfully, she gave me this gem of a fake laugh & it was perfect.

I shot it dark by pure accident because I was trying to keep up with her, which can sometimes be a challenge. I managed to salvage it in post-processing though.

The Anguiano Family | Ted Ensley Gardens | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/7/the-anguiano-family-ted-ensley-gardens-topeka-ks-family-photographer Ashley emailed me one day wanting to set up a session because her brother, Nick, his wife Katie and their new baby were making the trip back to Topeka for a few days. Of freaking course! I haven't seen them since my best friend Maria's wedding two years ago! Maria's extended family might as well be my own. I knew that this was a big deal for their mom because well, DJ is their first grandchild, and he's pretty dang special.

DJ was such a good baby. I caught this shot, but I can't even remember what he was upset about. The tears didn't last long, and he was back to his normal smiling self in no time at all.

Sessions like this remind me why family portraits are so important. With Nick and his family living a day-trip-in-the-car away, it brings them a little closer to have sweet photos on their walls and desk and all over their social media. It's good to capture their times together, even when they can't be all the time.

Little Ways to Flatter Yourself in a Portrait Session | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/7/little-ways-to-flatter-yourself-in-a-portrait-session Sometimes it's hard to schedule those family photos because you don't feel quite yourself, quite thin enough or pretty enough or together enough. We, as a people, put so much pressure on ourselves to look perfect, especially in photos that people are going to look at for years to come, that we avoid it altogether.

How to Prep for Summer Family Sessions | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/7/how-to-prep-for-summer-family-sessions Summer is a rough one, especially here in Kansas, where we get heat along with high humidity. Scheduling sessions can be hard because the heat and the sun limits ideal times for portraits.  It is possible though! Below are a few tips for making the most of your summer session!

Communicate with your photographer about posing and flow of the session beforehand.

Planning is always good, and your photographer is probably prepared and already knows the flow of how normal summer sessions go. But you, as a client, might not. Ask questions so that you know what to expect. This will make it go faster without sacrificing the number of photos taken because you'll have an idea of what is coming up.

Practice posing.

Figure out what makes you feel good. Not only does this boost your confidence, which will show tenfold in your photos, you won't have to have quite as much direction. Some people are natural at posing. Some aren't. And practice never hurt anyone. Here are some examples to give you inspiration.

Hydrate.

Seriously. This one might seem silly, but you don't want to get too hot. I just shot a family session yesterday evening at 7pm, and it was still 93 degrees out. It doesn't take long to get hot and sticky and cranky too. Plus, being hydrated makes you look better and more refreshed.

Bring snacks/drinks.

On more than one occasion, I have toted a small cooler on my wheelchair just to make sure that I have something cool with me. The car isn't always at a reasonable distance to go back during a shoot so just bring it with you. I usually keep a few snacks in my camera bag in case a kiddo needs some bribing too.

Schedule early morning shoots if possible.

Like I mentioned above, 93 degrees at 7pm. I am one of those weird people who love and thrive in warm spaces, (I use a space heater in my office in the summer even!) but it was hot at that shoot. Like my-nose-is-running and sweat-is-in-my-eyes kind of hot. I got some great shots, but sometimes the heat can make it hard to concentrate on much else. I like to schedule summer sessions in the morning too. The light is still gorgeous, and it is usually 15 degrees cooler.

How I Help My Clients Pick Their Favorite Images | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/7/how-i-help-my-clients-pick-their-favorite-images An hour doesn’t seem like a long time in the grand scheme of a day, but when you are doing a family shoot, an hour can produce a LOT of images. And with a lot of images comes a lot of choice and variety.  It’s been researched and proven that lots of choices are hard for people. Basically said, we don’t know how to make up our dang minds.

It’s hard, especially when they are staring at images of people that they love. They want them all. They want to display them all.

And they should. The first thing that should happen to help them decide what they want is to ask them before you even shoot the session. Talk to them. Help them decide where in their home they are thinking of displaying photos or who will be receiving them if they are a gift. Go into the session knowing what you should be shooting to give them those types of images.

Next, cull. Cull. Cull. Do not give them 5 images that are identical except for one person’s smile or slight turn of their head. I have been guilty of this before because they all seem so unique. Now I know, it makes the process harder. Go with your gut and pick and edit the best photo of that pose. They’ll never know the difference and will have an easier time loving one image of that pose instead of five.

Give your honest advice and opinion. They will trust you because you are the expert, and they are looking for your guidance anyway. Your client wants you to help them!

And this is where I tell them, sometimes less is more. Pick the absolute favorite, the one they cannot possibly live without, and make it the biggest. A single canvas or framed print is so strong. It will draw their visitors’ eyes, unlike a group of 10 smaller images that will feel distracting and overwhelming.  One or two images on their walls will feel simple and make those images the most important.

Lastly, reassure them that they made the right choice. This goes with the trust thing again. They probably know they did, but it never hurts to reinforce it.

The Galyean Family | Ted Ensley Gardens | Lake Shawnee | Topeka, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/7/the-galyean-family-ted-ensley-gardens-lake-shawnee-topeka-ks-family-photographer Barbara and her husband, Corey, are some of my most loyal clients. I get to capture their family at least once a year, and it's fun to watch their family become more comfortable and show their personalities for my camera.

Hailey, Kenzie, and Courtney are so fun and quirky. They always joke that they know when they are done with a pose because I say "Alriiiight." They giggle after I say it, and it took me a while to catch on. It's a weird habit I have, I guess.

This session was for the 4th, and I think that the colors are pretty perfect for them anyway. Bright and cheery and bubbly.

Until next time, enjoy!

Mackenzie | Senior | Olathe, Kansas | Heritage Park | Olathe Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/5/senior-olathe-kansas-heritage-park-olathe-senior-photographer

Graduation weekend(s) are upon us! 2018 seniors are still coming in, and that still makes my heart happy.

We went out to Heritage Park in Olathe for this shoot, and the green-filled trails are great! You would never guess that there are super busy baseball diamonds just behind this.

I love it when seniors infuse their personality into their photos, and now I can say that one of my seniors brought BOOKS along! I love it.

Have fun in California, Mackenzie!

The Robertson Family | Family Shoot | NOTO Arts District | Topeka, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/5/the-robertson-family-family-shoot-noto-arts-district-topeka-kansas-family-photographer I have known this family for a long time. Kelli and I went to high school together (I told you it was a long time!), and the last time that we did a family portrait session with them, each of the three older boys was about 12 inches shorter and definitely not as "cool" as they are now. Bella and Aiden, the younger kids, have grown so much too!

My favorite thing about family portrait sessions is watching the kids grow and change and come into their own personality. There is no shortage of great personality in these pictures, that's for sure, and absolutely no one is shy. I love that!

Here's to many more family sessions with them!

Chelsea + Alan | Topeka, Kansas | Topeka Wedding Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/4/chelsea-alan-topeka-kansas-topeka-wedding-photographer Chelsea has always been one the quietest and shiest people I know so when her mom, my first cousin, called me to photographer her small courthouse wedding, I thought two things. First, OF COURSE! Second, "Wait, she's old enough to get MARRIED?!" In my mind, she's still ten years old and the mot well-behaved kid at Grandma's Thanksgiving dinner.

But yes, she is a successful nurse and now, a WIFE. She and Alan were married on a Friday afternoon in front of the sweetest and most genuine judge in Topeka. I know at least four of us were crying almost the entire ceremony. Her mom, his mom, Chelsea, and me.

It never ceases to amaze the power and intensity of those words and vows when a couple recites them to each other.  They are strong words to say aloud and then be accountable for. Gets me every time.

Chelsea and Alan have a happy future; it's apparent in the way they look at each other. And really, that's all anyone can ask for.

Sheri + Neil | Dover, Kansas | Wedding Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/4/sheri-neil-dover-kansas-wedding-photographer Sheri and I have become the "team" of women in the quality department at our day job. It's us two and a bunch of guys.

I have watched her date a couple of guys who were at first, nice, then disastrously bad. Then she met Neil.

I won't go too much into their love story because they are both very private people, but let me just say that if you have ever wanted to watch a romantic comedy play out in front of you, their story is it. Serendipitous and sweet and nerve-wracking to watch, too.  They worked for this relationship in ways that most couples don't have to. They have each taken chances and traveled thousands of miles to get to where they are.

And now they are married.

Of course, Kansas decided to trick us with its weather on their wedding day. We expected cool but mild temperatures. What we got was cold and windy! Sheri was a champ though. Everyone was.

The ceremony was not too long, but not too short and the details were simply perfect.

5 Tips to Prepare Your Child for a Portrait Session https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/4/5-tips-to-prepare-your-child-for-a-portrait-session I have said it before, and I'll say it again.

After donuts for breakfast, we made a big pot of chili and are hanging around the house now, still in our pajamas. With the ice hitting the sky lights in the kitchen, it isn't worth getting dressed anyway.

I hope you all are having a great Easter! And hopefully it is far warmer than ours!

The Power of Bribery https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/3/the-power-of-bribery

Picture day can be a very, very stressful time if you have children. Finding the right outfit and a date that everyone is available already causes you a headache. Once you have that down, though, everything is smooth sailing. You have prepared everything to be perfect, and then your worst nightmare happens – your child won’t cooperate. Even after you’ve coached him or her for the past two weeks and the entire car ride leading up to the session, your kiddo still just isn't having it. You’ve tried all of the usual tricks and nothing is working. Sounds terrible, right?

Well, I’m here today to save you from this nightmare, and help you prevent this from even happening. Behold the power of bribery. I know some people frown upon this, however, they probably haven’t tried to get a four-year-old to sit in one position together, look at the camera, and smile. It’s no easy task! As a photographer, I’m going to give you the green light and tell you that it’s totally okay to bribe your kids for the sake of good photos.

We have a very limited amount of time to get all of the photos that you need, and I don’t want you to be stressed out or crunched for time because little Timmy is having a meltdown, or is hiding behind his hands the entire session, or sticking his tongue out at me. So, I welcome bribery with arms wide open.

Every child is different when it comes to bribery. They all have different personalities and like different things. Some children are motivated by candy, others cash. You just have to find out what works best for your child.

Here are some suggestions that we’ve noticed have worked.

  • Candy or fruit snacks
  • Dinner at their favorite restaurant after the session
  • Later bedtime
  • That awesome toy they’ve been drooling over
  • Extra time
  • A sleepover with a friend
  • Extended play time
  • They don’t have to eat their vegetables that night at dinner
  • They don’t have to do chores the next day
  • Give them back a privilege that’s been taken away the last time they were in trouble

While these aren’t the only options, we thought we’d give you a starting point to brainstorm your own ideas to help get your child to cooperate.

8/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/2/8/52 It's been a long weekend. There was lots of whining and not enough sleep. We managed to get a quick afternoon project in today though. It was a good thing for both of us after she just had a meltdown at Walmart and we walked out without a single thing. A good reminder for me to be patient, be loving, and be gentle with her when she needs. And a hope that she will be gentle with me when I need.

7 Tips for Preparing for Your Spring Session | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/2/7-tips-for-preparing-for-your-spring-session I've gone ahead and given you some tips to ensure your day is stress free and flawless for your spring session. Listen up!

1. Wear layers. Spring can be finicky in the sense that you can go from frigid to over heated in a matter of minutes. We suggest wearing layers -- tank top, tee shirt, cardigan, scarf, etc. That way each family member can peel off, or add, a layer as they see fit and remain comfortable throughout the session.

2. Location is a big deal. You better believe we're going to take advantage of the fresh, warm air and all those bud popping up from the ground and in the trees. If you have any favorite locations, let us know. We have a nice list on hand, ourselves.

3. Play into the colors of the season when choosing your family's outfits. Fresh pops of green, blue, pink and yellow are always a hit in the springtime. We recommend choosing a color theme for the whole gang, then slightly deviating from that with accessories to keep things interesting.

4. Speaking of accessories: wear them! Choose jewelry, scarves, or prints that play into the spring theme. Butterflies, flowers, insects, etc, can make for some super adorable family pictures.

5. Time it right. Book a session too early and you may miss out on those spring buds. Book too late and you've already wandered into summer territory. Keep an eye on the weather and give your photographer a call when the time is right.

6. Incorporate props. Spring offers some beautiful backdrops where props blend in perfectly. For example, old wooden chairs look stunning in a sea of blooming rose bushes, and a quilted blanket is lovely on the fresh, green grass.

7. Really think about your footwear. Spring can often mean a soggy ground, so flip-flops or heels are not the best choice. Instead, wear something that's comfortable and spring appropriate, like loafers, flats or boots.

How Much Time Do I Really Need for my Session? | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/2/how-much-time-do-i-really-need-for-my-session-topeka-ks-photographer Choosing the amount of time to schedule for a session can be daunting for some. You never know how the kids are going to act or what the weather will do. Yo just never know. So here are a few guidelines that can help determine how long to capture  the moments you want without going into that "I'm gonna throw a tantrum" territory with the kids!

  • Mini Session – 20-30 minutes – A mini session is ideal if you just want to document what your child looks like at the age he or she is right now. For example, doing a session for 7- year- old photos, or 4th grade photos, etc. These sessions are short and are best suited for older children (post-toddler) who are able to follow directions rather quickly. There will be some variation in the photos, but we don’t change locations or outfits.

  • Standard Session – 1 hour – This is our most popular session length. This session caters to younger children and allows us to get more creative shots of younger children as long as they don't tire too quickly. We can go for one outfit change and a change of scenery. An hour gives us more time to get the younger children to warm up and cooperate, which the mini session doesn’t allow for.

  • Extended Session – 1-2 hours – We suggest this session if you are doing a sibling session with three or more children. This allows me enough time to take photos of them together, as well as individually. It will also give us more time to pose them together and to get good, genuine smiles. Depending on how many children you have and their ages, this session can allow up to two outfit changes for siblings and 3-4 for individual children. We can also choose two locations as well.

4 Tips For Choosing Outfits for Family Portraits | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/2/how-to-put-together-portrait-session-outfits-in-4-easy-steps Hey momma, I see you over there, stressing out about what you and the hubs and kids should wear for your upcoming family portraits.

The colors, the patterns, what will look best. It's slightly overwhelming because you want these photos to be perfect. Believe me, I do too! But it doesn't have to be hard! I can almost promise that if you are happy and laughing and having a genuinely good time during the session, people won't even notice what you have on. Their eyes are drawn to faces, mostly the emotion of those faces.

Here are a few tips on how to pick outfits that will keep the process quick and painless and pull together outfits that will look great!

Keep It Simple.

Solids are normally a photographer's best friend. They don't take away the focus from the person wearing it, and they make a photo look very clean and sleek against the right backdrops. If you do want a patterned shirt, find solids for the other members of your family. A little bit of pattern can be a good thing. Too much pattern, not so much. You don't want to look back in 20 years and cringe at whatever the fad is. Simple and clean is your best bet.

Pick coordinating colors, not matchy-matchy.

I have to say that I have done family portraits where the girls all wore the same patterned outfit and the boys all wore solid shirts. They matched exactly. It worked, BUT only because their family dynamic made it work. On other occasions, the matching didn't work at all because the kids HATED the fact that they had the same shirt on. Sibling rivalry, maybe?

I recommend picking outfits that coordinate with each other, but do not match exactly.

Use Layers

One hour can feel like forever for a portrait session. For others, it flies by. Throw in an outfit change, and things can get tight. This is where layers and accessories can come in so handy. Taking a layer off or throwing on one takes less than a minute, and wah-la, it can look like a whole new outfit! Accessories do the same. A scarf can change your outfit entirely. No need to buy a bunch of new stuff either. Use whatcha got!

Make It Comfortable.

Don't wear anything that you are not going to be comfortable in. This is so important! When you aren't comfortable, the camera can see it. And when you see the photos, you're going to remember how tight those pants were or that your shirt wouldn't stay put. I truly think it takes away from the fun (and sometimes nerve-wracking) experience of having family portraits taken.

5/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/2/5/52 While most people were getting ready for Super Bowl parties, I was trying to convince my girl that Daddy was in fact just going to the store, not to Texas. She has been completely attached to him since he got home a few weeks ago, and it's actually kind of exhausting. For everyone.

6 Stress Relieving Tips to NOT Have a Mental Breakdown During Your Session | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/1/6-stress-relieving-tips-to-not-have-a-mental-breakdown-during-your-session Family pictures are great – they help you create and remember fond memories of your loving family. However, this day can get very stressful, and we want to ensure this doesn’t happen. If you’re stressed it will show, and we want your photos to be carefree. Here are some tips you can use on picture day to help you relax:

1. Take some deep breaths. Deep breathing is a common relaxation method. It can quickly calm your stress level and you can do it anywhere. Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth, counting slowly in your head while letting it all out.

2. Laugh. Laughter is a great way to release tension. It will also help your family relax to get some genuine smiles. Have everyone pretend to laugh and they will feel so ridiculous that they will actually laugh. This will ease everyone into relaxation mode. I, as the photographer, will do whatever I can to make you laugh. Yes, I will make farting jokes.

3. Count down slowly (in your head) from 10. Take a deep breath between each number. If you’re still feeling super stressed, start the process over, back at 10.

4. Distract yourself. If your family isn’t cooperating and you are getting stressed, suggest that we play a game or take a walk. This will let some of the energy out and also give us some good interacting photos. Prior to your session, think of a short game that your family would enjoy – it could be something like duck, duck, goose, or dancing to head, shoulders, knees, and toes, etc.

You can also distract yourself by going to your ‘happy place.’ Try to take yourself out of the situation you’re in and let your mind wander.

5. Trace your hand. Take your finger and trace a figure eight on the palm of your opposite hand. This helps relieve stress and muscle tension.

6.  Give lots of XOXOs. Not only will these make for cute poses, but one of the most effective ways to relieve stress is to hug someone or to kiss them. Gather your family in a big group hug, or give your husband a kiss and let your worries melt away.

4/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/1/4/52 I am going to be honest here. I hate stickers. I wish I would have found this sheet before you did so that I didn't have to peel them off the floor when you were done playing.

But the smile that shone across your face when you hollered "I'm STICKER GIRL!" with a fist in the air made it worth it.

Long and quiet, just soft enough so that I couldn't hear the exact words.

4 Items to Bring if You're Including Your Pet | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/1/4-items-to-bring-if-youre-including-your-pet If you are planning on bringing a pet to your session, we are more than happy to have you do that. We love furry friends and are always pleased to add them into our sessions! Here are some things you should remember to bring to ensure everything goes smoothly:

  1. A leash. This will help you keep your pet near to you and where you want him or her for photos. (They aren’t just for dogs, you know.) Be sure to bring a thinner leash, as they are easier to hide or edit out if necessary.
  2. A friend. Having someone come with you specifically to take care of your pet is ideal. This will help so that your pet is not running around all over the place or alone in the car, should you wish to take some photos without Fido.
  3. Treats are great bribery for your animal. It will help keep your pet still and focused on the camera.
  4. A favorite toy. The noisier the better. This is also a great tool to help keep your pet’s attention on me. We can also use it for a fun game and get some fun interaction shots.

1/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/1/1/52 It is the end of the first week of 2018! And that means, it is the very first 52 Weeks Project day!

The photo was actually Monday, the first day of the year. And Reagan was a hot mess the way everyone else who partied hard the night before was.  In her fancy dress and silly leggings, sneaking Cheetos off the messy, cluttered counters.

Tips for Preparing Your Husband For a Portrait Session | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2018/1/tips-for-preparing-your-husband-for-a-portrait-session For some of us, preparing our husbands for the family photo session is as exhausting as preparing the kids. If your husband is happy-go-lucky about photo day, that’s excellent. If you’re dealing with someone who’s reluctant, however, then here are some things you can do to help:

  • Especially if this is your first session together with the family now that the kids are mobile, let him know how the session will go and discuss your expectations. Also, if you have to bribe the kids, communicate this with him so he can help remind them of the bribery.
  • Warn him that the kids will probably be crazy or freak out and that he should prepare himself for that. Let him know that it will still be fine and to try not to get overwhelmed or worried.
  • Let him know that the more helpful he is in getting himself and the kids ready, the less stressed you will be and the less chance of an argument between you arising.
  • Remind him that the session is only one to two hours and then it will all be over. This way, he sees a light at the end of the tunnel and can stick it out.
  • If your husband is being difficult, bribe him to cooperate during the session as well. If it works for the kiddos, it may very well work for him!
  • And most importantly - remind him that you love him (and that he loves you, and that’s why he’s cooperating with this). Tell him how much you appreciate his support and cooperation in this, and how pleased you are going to be with the finished photos.

The Brannan Family | Overbrook, KS | Family Photography https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/11/the-brannan-family-overbrook-ks-family-photography The last time I had a session with Kyle and Megan and their boys, it was the windiest session I have ever had. Ever.

So of course, we had to reshoot. We waited until fall so that they would have updated photos for their Christmas cards, and it couldn't have turned out any better than it did.

The boys are a little older. They like me a little more, and their attention span is way better. And it made for such great photos of those two!

Ashlyn | Overbrook, KS | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/11/ashlyn-overbrook-ks-overbrook-ks-family-photographer I might be blessed with the best clients ever. Because when my car got put in the shop for over 3 weeks now (I hit a big dog on the highway on November and am still without a car!), they have offered to come to me! The past 2 sessions have been at my house, on the property around our house, and really, they have been a couple of my favorites.

We might have picked the windiest chilliest day of the month to finally shoot Ashlyn's mini session, but we got it done! And let me tell you, it was worth it.

The sun was hitting her blonde hair just right to give her that halo, and it didn't look cold at all! She's such a sweetheart and didn't complain one time.

Grant | Lansing High School | Class of 2018 https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/10/grant-lansing-high-school-class-of-2018 This is the last nephew I have graduating for a while. It felt like it was a wave before with 3 back-to-back, but now, after Grant, we will be done for a few years.

It had rained the night before, and I think we were all a little bit nervous that the mud would ruin our shoot. Luckily, for all of us, Grant only had to help me out of the mud 3 times. I like to off-road, but mud and a wheelchair don't mix very well.

We drove from his house in Lansing to his grandfather's house further out in the country, and as I was following him and his mom in his truck, I couldn't help but watch the light. Photographers know good light, and this light was pretty much perfect. I knew that this shoot would be golden, and not just because of the light.

Grant is such a good kid. Always respectful and quiet and when he does talk, it is usually something hilarious. And look at him, he could be a model.

He will be 18 this week too! Even though I have *only* been in his family for about 6 years, it has been fun to watch him grow and change. And now he's gonna be an adult!

But we agreed that for his first birthday, we would get him in.

I am so happy that we did. Right away, he was a flirt. It's so cute when a baby's personality is so evident, and his definitely was. He is a momma's boy, that much is true. We did photos with her, and then we planned on a cake smash. He had fun for about 2 minutes, then he just wanted to crawl all around.

Let's be honest. One-year-olds are basically tiny bosses for us adults.

I look forward to more sessions with Marik and Alicia in the future!

Olivia | Lawrence Arborteum | Lawrence, Kansas Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/10/olivia-lawrence-arborteum-lawrence-kansas-photographer Every time I see Olivia, she just gets cuter and cuter and sweeter and sweeter. We met up at the Lawrence Arboretum for her fall photos, and even though there is still plenty of green left in Kansas, they turned out so well!

I love watching kiddos grow from year to year, and I have to say that Olivia has grown so much and matured so much. It seems like she was just a little bitty thing last year, and this year, she's a six-year-old, losing teeth and giggling when we teased her about a boyfriend.

Time can slow down any time now.

5 Tips for Starting Your Own Personal Project https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/10/5-tips-for-starting-your-own-personal-project

Being a professional photographer can be draining. Don't get me wrong - I love what I do - but being a creative entrepreneur can be ten times harder than being an employee for someone else's dream.

One way I keep my creative spark alive with all the other stuff that need to be done alongside shooting my clients is to have a personal project. You've probably seen my 52 Weeks project up on the blog. I choose one photo of my daughter every week to post. Sometimes I have 10 to choose from, and sometimes I have to remind myself that I need one to post on Sunday!

At the end of the year, I am going to put together an album. 52 photos of Reagan throughout the year, doing the things she loves (coloring, running outside in rain boots, lounging, etc). It's really become a memory keeping thing for me too.

If you decide to do a personal project - or get back to an old one - here are a few things to think about.

1. Choose something that you care about, not only what you think people will want to see. You want to keep your interest and creativity peaked and feel that connection so that you don't become bored.

2. Carve out time to make it a priority. I am guilty of getting lost in the busy-ness of life, and it drains me. Personal projects often serve as a project to fill us up too.

3. Be prepared. Know what you need, if anything, how you'll execute it, who you might need help from, etc. The better the plan, the better your project will be.

4. Put a timeline on it. Intervals, deadlines, whatever works best for you. I do mine once a week, and I post on my blog on Sundays. Normally during naptime. It works pretty well most of the time (don't mind that I post 4 today because I lost my SD card....).

5. Keep your enthusiasm. Tell your friends & family about it, and let them enjoy the project too. They can also serve as accountability partners if you fall behind!

7 Ways to Make Clients Comfortable | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/9/5-ways-to-make-clients-comfortable-topeka-ks-photographer Having professional portraits taken can be a BIG DEAL for a lot of people. The planning, the money, the stress over whether the kids are going to go berserk and throw fits the whole time in their pretty outfits. It can be a stressful thing, which is why I really think keeps many families (AKA Moms) don't schedule more professional family photos. Once a year is usually more than enough for you! I see you out there nodding your head.

I am guilty of it myself. This year will be the first year my husband, daughter, and myself will have family portraits taken. We have never done it before, and my daughter is 3 years old!

I put together a few tips of things I am going to follow myself to gear up for our own session.

  • 1.  Be yourself. If your client can sense that you are comfortable, it will help ease their own nerves. Laugh, joke, be yourself. Be goofy if you're goofy. Tell them little snippets of your life so that they can have a sense of who you are. And even if you have only just met them, act like you have known them for years and years.

  • 2. Give posing directions.  I can tell you that when some client don't know how to stand, or which leg to put their weight on or where they should put their hands, it freaks them out. They want to look good and feel good about their photos before they see them. They are relying on you as their photographer to give them that direction. You have to remember that you do this all. the. time. But they don't. Clients like direction.

  • 3. Ask questions. If a client feels that you are interested in their life, and you should be to build a good relationship, they are going to be more open than if you just stood in silence and showed no interest whatsoever in their kids, their jobs, their values, etc.

  • 4. Be prepared. Take extra batteries, extra memory cards, whatever you need as back up. JUST IN CASE. If something should ever go wrong (knock on wood), your stress will become their stress. And then the whole session could be a bust.  Just do what you need to make sure that it's as smooth as it could be. The experience is just as important as the photos.

  • 5. Incorporate their interests. If they are huge football nuts, maybe encourage them to take some portraits in their jerseys.  Bring along their family dog. Oh, they play guitar? Bring it too! Whatever they like/love to do, encourage portraits that include or convey that. Portraits that show their family's personality are usually a big hit.

  • 6. Give compliments. If you like their outfits, tell Mom she did a great job. If the pose is great, let them you it looks great! Tell Mom her hair looks fantastic. Tell Dad that his shirt is really nice. Giggle with the kids and let them know their smile is your favorite. Little compliments can make a big difference. It amps up their confidence, and we all know that confidence comes across their face. It can make all the difference in a average oh-that's-pretty photo and a SUPER-GORGEOUS OH-MY-GOD-I-HAVE-TO-HAVE-IT photo.

  • 7. Reassure them. At the end of the session, I take a quick peek at some of the photos on my camera (while they are gathering up their stuff and getting ready to head for the car) and just reassure them that you captured great shots, and that you are so excited to show them when you're done editing. It leaves the session on a high note and builds excitement that brews in them until the reveal session.

There you go. I hope these help even just a little bit. The more comfortable your client is, the better your portraits will be!

Magda & Miguel | Overland Park, KS | Kansas City Couples Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/9/magda-miguel-overland-park-ks-kansas-city-couples-photographer My spinal cord injury has brought a lot of really nice, neat, entertaining and influential people into my life, and Magda is one of those people.

We met when she was a contestant last year in the Ms. Wheelchair Kansas competition, and even though she wasn't selected, she continues to do so much good advocacy work around the KC area. She has always been a very vocal supporter of my photography business, and she added my business to her database of businesses that are owned and operated by people with disabilities. She is doing such good work.

So when she asked me about a shoot for her and her husband, Miguel, I jumped at the chance. Reagan and I spent last Saturday afternoon with them. It was a warm day, but the breeze helped us as we sped down the street to the Heatherstone Park in Overland Park.

Reagan, my daughter, is always a little shy around people she doesn't know well, but by the end of the shoot, she climbed on Magda's chair for a big hug. And my momma heart melted all at the same time. Pretty sure that Magda's did too.

The Littles | Family Time | Circle S Ranch | Lawrence, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/9/the-littles-family-time-circle-s-ranch-lawrence-ks-photographer I have worked with Jeff for seven years, and when he came to me to talk to me about a Mommy & Me portrait session, I was excited.  We spend so much of our time with people at work, and I think that it is important to get to know some of them outside of work, along with their families. It's nice to be able to see what makes people happy outside of the walls of the cellophane plant.

Diane works at the Circle S Ranch, and I am so happy that she chose it as her location choice. It's where she and Jeff were married, and it's evident that Sophie was so comfortable there too. It made the entire session so much smoother.

I love the property there, and it seemed to fit their family perfectly. The light, the colors. It was great.

Gia | Lake Shawnee Ted Ensley Gardens Topeka, KS | Topeka, Kansas Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/9/gia-lake-shawnee-ted-ensley-gardens-topeka-ks-topeka-kansas-photographer Life is funny in many ways. It can bring people into our circle by chance that otherwise we wouldn't find.

I found Priscilla, Gia's mom, that way. We were each bridesmaids in a wedding for our best friend, Maria, along with Maria's sister and friend Ashleigh. We hadn't known much about each other except that Maria was important to us, but we quickly became friends over that short amount of time together too.

Priscilla asked me to take Gia's photos to use on her quinceaera invites, and really, I was so flattered. Quinceaeras are a big deal, and so I wanted this whole session to be perfect. Lucky for me, Gia is easy-going and gorgeous. Priscilla left us to it while we were at Ted Ensley Gardens. I think she expected Gia to be nervous, but the nerves played to her advantage.

I also loved that Priscilla didn't *really* have any clue what the photos might look like, so the surprise of revealing them was extra fun.

I am so happy that they both loved them. And I hope you do too.

Andy is in JROTC, and he is very serious about it. And he looks pretty dapper in his uniform.

I am cheating a bit this week by using a photo from 3 weeks ago, but I just love it so much. And I have been to damn busy to get any interesting shots of my girl this week. I will be better next week.

Dear Reagan,

You are a sassypants little girl these days, and you love to push your limits, knowing just what to say to make me laugh even though you are being defiant. You call me Mommy (instead of just Momma) when you are trying to get your way because you know it usually works.

You love to wear dresses and have your hair look pretty with bows, even if you HATE having it brushed. You are obsessed with band-aids, needing them for imaginary boo-boos.

You are pretty attached to me when I am off work, and that's okay with me. I remind myself that you will never be the small again. You won't always want to curl your 35-pound little body onto my lap. You won't always tell me that I am your "favorite mom ever."

I am soaking it up while I can.

Love you forever,
Momma

The Hoss Family | Overbrook, KS https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/8/the-hoss-family-overbrook-ks I have known this family for quite a while. Wade and I work at the same place, and when we moved to Overbrook, they were the closest neighbors that we knew. Even if they live like a few miles down the road.

We had originally planned on getting to the sunflower field around sunset to capture their family photos, BUUUUT when I showed up, the sunflowers were dead. Like dead, dead. It looked like a field of black with sporadic spots of yellow. I am guessing that the storm on Tuesday evening just broke them all down far enough to end their season short. With some quick thinking Wade suggested we go to his friend's farm, which is literally just a mile away down the road. It turned out to be pretty perfect in the end.

We managed to capture far more portraits than we would have at the sunflower field. And it seemed to really fit with the personality of their family.

Summer skies are the best also. Just look.

Jane, Jessica, & Hunter | Lake Shawnee | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/8/jane-jessica-hunter-lake-shawnee-topeka-ks-photographer I went to a huge high school. We’re talking 1,000+ students on three floors of a school that was a block wide. I normally stayed with my small group of friends, but I was familiar with a lot of people. Different classes, different cliques.

When Sharla contacted me about a Lace, Pearls & Little Girls session for her daughters, I knew that she looked so familiar right away. And of course, she was. She was a year younger than me through middle school and high school years. We had mutual friends, but somehow never really became friends ourselves.

Her girls, Jane, Jessi, and Hunter, were dolls to work with. Their personalities were so different from one another, but they all had a quiet smile like their mom. We met at Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee, and we were able to get so many great portraits of all three of them. Hunter was all too happy to jump in the water in her lace, and her big sisters were there to make sure she didn’t fall. We watched butterflies, chased each other, and saw squirrels. It was a great and energetic shoot!

Using Pinterest to Plan Your Session | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/8/using-pinterest-to-plan-your-session-topeka-ks-photographer Most of us know what Pinterest is. Quite a few of us use it for either inspiration, funny quotes, or an easy recipe to make for dinner on a Friday night. It's a great source of information, and can be used as a search engine for people who are interested in the same things that we are.

So, of course, it canbe used as a way to curate images that you are drawn to as inspiration for a portrait session of your own.

I always give my clients the opportunity to share their images with me on Pinterest that really like on a shared board. They can pin images, and so can I. I don't try to recreate the images that they pin, but I do try to understand what my clients were drawn to. The poses, the lighting, the setting. It can all give me an understanding of what style they like.

What if your client pins only images that are completely out of your style and comfort zone and something that you couldn't possibly deliver without going far out of your normal shooting style? Your client should understand your style prior to booking and starting a Pinterest board, but maybe they haven't.  Seeing what they like gives you that open communication channel to say "Hey, I might not be the photographer for you."

It's good for everyone!

Pin away, friends!

Molly & Livy | Lake Shawnee Ted Ensley Gardens | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/8/molly-livy-lake-shawnee-ted-ensley-gardens-topeka-ks-photographer When I first advertised my Lace, Pearls & Little Girls sessions, I knew I wanted other mommas to feel that complete awe when they see their daughters all dressed up in their wedding gown or beautiful lace and sweet smiles. Sara, Molly & Livy's mom, jumped at the chance to book, and she told me that she has been dreaming of getting the girls in her dress but never got around to it.

So one evening after we both left our workplace, we met at Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee in Topeka, and I could not have asked for better light for these two girls.

Molly wore Sara's dress first, and the little squeal that she gave was just what I wanted. Molly was excited, and Sara was too. It took some ingenuity to keep the dress on Livy's little bitty frame, but we did it. They just look so sweet.

After we finished with the wedding dress, we did some "sister pictures," and I have to say that I don't think I have ever seen two kids as perfectly excited as these two. They had poses they wanted and ideas of where. And again, that light.

I am looking forward so much to their full family session in October!

32/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/8/32/52

It has been both busy and relaxing around here. It was fair week around here, and it is always so much fun. There's always a little buzz of small town pride when it is fair week.

My husband is a volunteer firefighter, and the fire station always hosts an open house the Saturday morning/afternoon of the fair. Over the past year, our family has gotten close to the other families who also have volunteer firefighters, and it made the day much more fun.

Reagan latched onto Courtney, who you may have seen in some of my other blogs. Her momma loves to have their photos taken, and Courtney is so good with Reagan. They blew bubbles and played in the fire truck and ambulance. They both got wet when they got the fire hoses out. They skipped down the sidewalk holding hands. It was just so cute.

I am thankful to be a part of a small community where my kid can have such friends.

Chloe and Bella | Lake Shawnee, Ted Ensley Gardens | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/8/chloe-and-bella-lake-shawnee-ted-ensley-gardens-topeka-ks-photographer I do almost all of my portrait sessions in the evenings, an hour or so before the sun is to set, to catch that golden light that always breaths life into portraits. I know that getting up early is never something that people like to do, but I am so glad that Maria agreed when I asked her to shoot in the morning light at Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee. Because look. at. that. light.

Bella was shy with me in the beginning, but she quickly came around and gave me high fives after her shots. She looked so adorable in her lace and boots.

Chloe and her fiery red hair. I love it. I always think that things that set us apart from others are our greatest attributes, and at first glance, it's Chloe's hair. Then you hear how sweet and confident she is. It comes across her face.

We finally moved Reagan to a toddler bed (actually just converted her crib but same thing). She seems so much older now, and she still looks so small in that bed. She has only asked me to sing to her twice since we switched, and that is heart-breaking but satisfying too. We used to sing every night. She would drag bedtime on and on with "one more song" and now she just hops into bed and wants tucked in.

If time could slow down, that would be great.

Emma and Aubrey | Lace, Pearls & Little Girls | Overbrook, Kansas Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/7/emma-and-aubrey-lace-pearls-little-girls-overbrook-kansas-photographer

You wouldn't know it from these photos, but it was HOT outside when we shot these. Like, 90 degrees. And while both girls weren't too sure about putting on their grandma's wedding dress, they both were good sports in the end, and dare I say, I think they both enjoyed it a little bit.

Their grandmother is probably one of the sweetest women I have ever met. I don't say that lightly. She really is. She is a nurse, a volunteer paramedic, and just a generally good woman. She is strong and sassy and has a huge heart. So naturally, these little ladies are in a good blood line.

And beautiful. That's obvious.

For Aubrey, we had to add a little makeup action to make her part of the session happen, but it fell right in with our theme. And it worked. I'll have to keep that trick up my sleeve for next time!

How To Prepare For a Portrait Session https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/7/how-to-prepare

For some people, the thought of scheduling a portrait session for their family is a big deal, and it should be. Professional portrait sessions aren’t cheap. Professional products that are going to go on your walls for years and years aren’t cheap. They are valuable, not cheap.

It makes sense that people would want to look their best and feel their best. After all, how you feel directly impacts one’s confidence. And believe me when I say that confidence can been seen in a photo.

One way to ensure that you are feeling your best is to get enough sleep for a few days before. Sleep can really be a deal-breaker for some people (especially guys, it seems) because being tired is just, well, tiring. Tempers are shorter, and small irritations turn into BIG DEALS. It can be no fun for everybody so be well-rested!

Get your hair/makeup done.

Like I mentioned above, confidence can make such a difference in how portraits turn out. Some people just budget in a hair and makeup person (and depending on the photographer and type of session, it may be included in the fees). If you are looking beautiful, you will be feeling better and showing that to the camera. And then when you look back years later, it is so easy to call that feeling back up. Don’t underestimate the power of confidence. Aline, above, did her own hair and makeup, but you can tell that it boosted her confidence. It matters more than some realize.

Consult your photographer about outfits.

Even if you have a really good idea of what will look good, it never hurts to get tips from the one who has seen it all! check for great colors and how they might compliment your location.

Get to know your photographer.

You are going to want to be comfortable with your photographer, even if portraits feel like the most UNcomfortable thing for you. Being able to laugh or joke or have great conversation about real things in each other’s lives will make this so much more enjoyable for everyone. And it will make your expressions and smiles so much more REAL.

Introduce kids prior to session.

Again, they’ll be more comfortable. Even the shyest kiddos will come out of their shell eventually!

Be early.

This is similar to the be well-rested tip. Running late is going to throw everyone off and take stress to a higher level than it needs to be. If you can’t be early, at least be on time.

Aline & Fernando | Kansas City Maternity Photography | Loose Park https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/7/aline-fernando-kansas-city-maternity-photography-loose-park When I sent out a model call for soon-to-be mommas in my area, I really couldn't have hit a bigger pot of gold. I had quite a few applicants, and ultimately I could only pick 2. Aline was the first that I chose because based on her application, I knew we would get along.

We met one morning in May and had a cup of coffee and discussed what my vision was, what her ideas were, and we planned for early July. Last weekend we met up at Loose Park, and within an hour, we had so many good shots of her and her husband that I couldn't hardly wait to get home to get them on my computer.

The light was perfect, and as usual, Loose Park was bustling with photographers with engagement, senior and other maternity sessions. It was just a good evening for it. Aline is so sweet, and as you can see from the photos, she is just beautiful. It's also apparent how much Fernando adores her.

I wish them both the best of luck in their journey into parenthood!

With Greg working a lot (hail season is feast or famine, really), we have been taking little adventures. Library trips, joy rides around the lakes, and yesterday, we stopped in my mom's teeny tiny hometown at the park on our way to a family reunion.

She loved it, of course, and was super mad when it was time to leave. I don't know where she gets that stubbornness from....

Father's Day Surprise | Barbara + her girls | Overbrook, KS Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/6/fathers-day-surprise-barbara-her-girls-overbrook-ks-family-photographer Now that the secret is out & Corey has seen the pictures below, I can post them! It is always hard to keep such great photos to myself, but I knew that the hard work of keeping them under wraps would be totally worth it for Barbara and her husband Corey.

Barbara messaged me about two weeks ago and wanted to do a quick session for her husband for Father's Day. We planned it for a weekday evening at my house, which worked out pretty perfect. We knew we would have plenty of time to get photos in before he came home from work. She messaged me a little earlier than we had planned and said "We're on our way!" When her and the girls arrived, she said "He's on his way home!"

We almost got caught. The ONE DAY we needed him to work late, he was coming home early.  But we pulled it off, and he never suspected a thing. He thought that Barbara just had the girls do a red, white, and blue themed shoot. She's pretty clever!

I love the ones of the girls in their dad's shirts and baseball hats too. Cute!

22/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/6/22/52 Here we are, the crazy-haired twins.

I don't regularly get my photo taken and certainly didn't plan on it today (obviously). I'm really not a fan honestly, but lately I am realizing that Reagan and I are basically reflections of each other. She learns so much from me (maybe a few four-letter words that she shouldn't), and I learn SO much from her (mostly about patience and unconditional, unbearable love). I need to be better at including myself in photos with her because one day, that is all she will have. My photos will become her memories.

It's important to me for her to remember me as I was - no makeup, a ponytail and hoodie. It's important for me to show her that Mom was there, present in the moment and not always behind the camera.

My Favorite Topeka Portrait Locations | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/6/my-favorite-topeka-portrait-locations-topeka-ks-photographer Sometimes when I get inquiries about portrait sessions, , the client knows exactly where they want to go. Other times, I help guide them by asking what they want from the session, what their "vibe" is, and what they plan to do with their photos. Let's face it: some people don't want grungy scenes on the huge wall in their living room, no matter how beautiful their kids are. Some do.

Personal style can play a huge part in where we shoot. These are my favorite (and most used obviously) places around Topeka.

  • Lake Shawnee Ted Ensley Gardens

This park is so versatile. There are beautiful gardens, gazebos, bridges and waterfalls. In the spring, the tulips are out in full force, and it feels very fresh. There is an area for weddings, but this garden is great for any kind of portraiture.

  • Ward Meade Park

Historic old town Ward Meade is located in the middle of the city, tucked away near Potwin. Like Ted Ensley Gardens, there are many different areas that can serve as backdrops, and each is beautiful in its own right. Also, this is a great wedding spot too!

  • Governor’s Trails

For a more natural and simple feel, the Governor’s trails and fields are great. The evening sunsets work well and give that very distinct “golden hour” feel.

  • Capitol Building

The gray muted tone of the building gives great contrast to most any color, and the simplicity is very elegant. Perfect for wedding portraits that really focus on the relationship between two people, and not the surroundings.

  • NOTO

I lived in North Topeka my entire life until about 3 years ago, and just when I move, they revitalize the place into one of the neatest urban parts of the city. It’s very eclectic and has buildings that give a very grunge feel. There is no lack of personality in the 4 -5 block area. I can’t wait to see this grow.

No, I Didn't Go to Photography School | Topeka, KS Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/6/no-i-didnt-go-to-photography-school-topeka-ks-photograher I read a post last week from a girl who was being ridiculed by her own sister-in-law for not attending college and gaining a degree for photography, but still running a sustainable, profitable photography business. The sister-in-law was also a photographer who had gone the photography degree route, but she was struggling to book clients. According the sister-in-law, the original poster shouldn't be able to call herself a professional photographer.

The post left me a little uneasy and frankly, a little angry. Who gets to decide what qualifies us as a professional? Does a degree do that? Or an income?

I didn't go to college to be a photographer. Originally, I went to be a journalist. For a lot of reasons, my path changed, and I ended up with a degree in mass media with an emphasis in writing and publishing. I took multiple classes that dealt with some sort of photography or video, but nothing too in depth. So even though I make an income as a photographer now, should I not call myself a professional?

Food for thought. Also, let's not be judgmental in such a largely bigoted world. You do you, let everyone else do them.

Everyday Life Is Beautiful. | Topeka, KS Lifestyle Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/5/momtographer-everyday-life-is-beautiful My 52 Weeks project is on this blog probably more than any other subjects. I love it. I love capturing such real moments in Reagan's life that one day I will forget have even happened until I see the photos. She is always in her element, usually with clothes that mismatch and hair that looks like it hasn't seen a brush for weeks.

Some professional photographers look down on "momtographers" and think that they should not be able to call themselves a photographer at all. I think that if a woman (or man for that matter) learns the art of photography because they want to capture these special moments for their children, then they can call themselves whatever they want.

The point is: the most mundane, simple things in a day can be the most beautiful captures. A child's sleeping face, a muddy pair of boots after a good mud-puddle-jumping play date, bedtime reading. It's all the things that are fleeting for us as parents.

They can be just as important as posed smiling shots. They are the ones that make us REMEMBER.

10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer | Topeka, KS Wedding Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/5/10-questions-to-ask-your-wedding-photographer 20111223_AL1B069520111223_AL1B0695 Being engaged is a wonderful time, until you hit the stress. Then it feels like you are running a marathon with no idea of the route. That was my experience anyway. Maybe you are having a super easy non-procrastinator engagement. Still, it's good to know what to ask your potential photographers before signing a contract.

  • What is your style?

Some photographers are into candid shots. Some like more posed looks. Some edit dark. Some love their photos to be light and "airy." it is important to find a photographer who shoots in a manner that you can relate to and can tell the story of your day the way you want it to be remembered.

  • How many weddings have you shot?

Experience is not always a make or break thing when it comes to a wedding, but the more experience a photographer has at dealing with fast-paced, high stress situations, the better. Don't underestimate because everyone starts somewhere, but it is something to think about.

  • Have you ever shot at our venue before?

Again, this ties into the experience things. If they have shot at your venue previously, they'll know the layout and lighting and available spots for great portraits.

  • Will I get color and black and white photos?

This should be lined out in the photographer's policies or contract, but it never hurts to ask the questions and know what you can expect to receive.

  • What is included in your packages?

Again, this should be very clear so that you know what products you will be receiving after the wedding.

  • Will you have a second shooter or assistants?

Most agreements include meals for the photographer(s), so it is important to know if there will be an extra person working.

  • What is your timeline for finishing the photos?

Most of these questions are all about expectations between you and your photographer. What you can expect from them, and what they can expect from you. This will give you an idea of when you can expect to see your photos and make any selections for products.

  • Can we see your portfolio?

Photographers should examples of their work that is easily accessible. Most have beautiful websites at their fingertips.

  • Will you help us put together a shot list?

I can bet that your photographer has experienced the wedding day jitters more than their couple--just because they do this fairly often. They can help put together a shot list with you days or weeks prior to the wedding, ensuring that you get all of the family shots you want. Waiting until the day off the wedding can cause you to miss precious shots that you want!

  • Do we receive digital images?

This is important for you to clear up with your photographer right away when discussing what you will receive.  Some photographers are comfortable giving the entire gallery to clients to print on their own, while some like to help with sending for print and products. Neither way is better than the other. It's just how they run their business. It's best either way to know up front.

The Wadsworth Family | English Landing Park | Family Time | Kansas City Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/5/the-wadsworth-family-english-landing-park-family-time Bonnie contacted me a few months ago about having new portraits of her family taken since they hadn't been updated since little David was born. We planned and planned, and we were finally able to meet on a chilly afternoon in middle April.

You would never believe it from the great smiles I got from their boys, but the temperature dropped about 10 degrees during the hour we were shooting. No joke. It was nice when we started, and I think we were all shivering by the time we were done.

I was able to hold their ordering session online (yay for Skype!), and I am so happy that they will have great prints to put on their walls in their new home.

The Kreutzer Family | Great Plains Nature Center| Wichita, KS | Family Time https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/5/the-kreutzer-family-great-plains-nature-center-wichita-ks-family-time Sometimes life works in funny ways. It brings people to you who you can become great friends with, and ones that you can admire.

Jenny is that for me. She was injured at a young age like I was, and she went on to get married, have a great job, and have 2 beautiful daughters. Our lives are similar, and I think that we quietly relate very well to each other.

When she asked me to take her family portraits, I was so excited. I jumped at the chance. And of course, they turned out fantastic.

Jenny and LeRoy's girls are so sweet and lovable too. They turned on the charm too!

18/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/5/18/52

Reagan and I had our monthly "girls day" together, and it was probably one of my favorites so far.

I took her to see Beauty and the Beast, which she did really well in. I was nervous because she has never been to the movies before, and I didn't want to have to leave 10 minutes in. She was tired, but she made it through the whole thing. Great movie btw also.

We also picked out her swim suit for her swim lessons that start in June. I am so glad that my work training is the week before so I won't have to miss any of them! She picked out a super cute blue striped one-piece over all the others. Princesses, Peppa Pig, Elmo. She wanted stripes.

Then we went to a local greenhouse to find her a "flower" (a plant). She picked out a tiny succulent, and that made my heart soar. This girl was made for me.

Beauty and the Beast, stripes, and succulents. <3

And their boys. Well, they are gorgeous. Just look at those eyes!

We spent a Saturday afternoon in Ottawa, Kansas at Forest Park, wrangling the boys and trying to survive the crazy wind. We managed to get some great shots despite the weather, and I know that when we have our next session toward fall, we are going to get more great portraits of this family!

I have been planning a "princess" set up for Reagan for quite a while, and even though it didn't turn out QUITE like I had imagined it in my head, I got some beautiful shots of my girl just being her giggley, lovely self.

She is learning that what she does is going to be caught in my camera, so she has been "posing" and asking to see what it looks like. I love it.

It's been a challenging few weeks. As Reagan nears 3 years old, she grows more headstrong, and we butt heads. I always read those quotes about "your child will be twice as stubborn as you" and laughed. Now, I'm a believer.

She is sweet and snuggley, and crazy independent and resilient. And obviously, an awesome, stylish girl.

That girl, she is mine.

Jordan | Senior 2017 | Seaman High School | Topeka, KS Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/4/jordan-senior-2017-seaman-high-school-topeka-ks-senior-photographer

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I had to be put on bed rest at around 30 weeks. In the hospital even. It was a long and boring and mostly uneventful month – minus the whole leaving-with-a-baby thing – but I did manage to make some very good friends with a few of my nurses. One of them was Rhonda.

We set up a time for a Sunday for her son’s senior pictures, and wa-lah.

Jordan is a super smart kid. I say kid, but he will be 18 soon! He is an IT guy so he is very analytical and after talking to him for just a bit, it’s evident that he knows where he wants to go in life.

We went to NOTO (my favorite!) and then to the Equality House and Lake Shawnee. I love that he wanted a variety of places and environments. The colors are great. He was comfortable, and the photos turned out great!

I am looking forward to seeing what he does with his future.

James and Emily | Seniors | 2017 | Topeka, KS Senior Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/4/james-and-emily-seniors-2017

James and Emily are twins. Not identical (duh).  They are also my niece and nephew.

We have been sorta planning their senior pictures since last year when their older brother Michael was graduating. I love that they wanted to come to Topeka so that they would have a different vibe than a lot of their friends, who were mostly shooting in the West Bottoms.

It was a frigid morning, and normally I don’t do well in the cold. Thanks to new thermal shirts, I was just fine. Emily didn’t bat an eye when she was in her strapless dress either. You would think she was in 70 degree weather.

James was not overly enthused about senior photos, but he turned it on when he needed to and got some great shots.

13/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/4/13/52 I have been able to spend a lot of time with Reagan lately during normal "working" hours because my job gives me a little bit of flexibility. It's twice as hard when this little girl just wants to play! How can you say no to that face!?

12/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/3/12/52 Tuesday already! Reagan and I spent most of the weekend at home, just hanging out while Greg was outside working on the RZR track (that's a whole different story). She has been really observant lately, and she grabbed her Barbie laptop, place it just so precisely on her lap and began to tap, tap, tap away at the keys. She turned to me and plainly said "Momma, I'm working." Melted my heart.

Throwback Session: Darcy and Jeremy https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/3/throwback-thursday-session-darcy-and-jeremy

It was almost a year ago that my sister sent us a mass text, telling us that she and her fiancé had changed their minds and decided to go to the courthouse to get married.

And that is exactly what they did. On 3-11-16, we went to the lake to take photos and headed over to the courthouse for their short ceremony, then went to their home for a small reception of close family and friends.

This year, they are on a boat somewhere celebrating with all their 311 friends.

Happy Anniversary, you two!

6/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/2/6/52

This week/weekend has been a semi-rough one. After battling the ear infection a few weeks ago, Reagan must've caught a bug and woke up around 9:30 last night throwing up. My poor girl didn't get to sleep until almost 3, threw up again at 4:30am and slept til 8:15am.

It's so hard to watch babies be sick because they don't really know what is happening, only that it is NOT FUN.

Today, it's coming out the other end.

BUT on a good note, I managed to snap some shots yesterday when the temperature was in the 70s of her playing outside. This girl. She only wants to wear dresses (most days it is Elsa) but LOVES to get dirty.

5/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/2/5/52 It was a long weekend. It was a good weekend.

After battling an ear infection and cough all week long, Reagan was finally able to get back to her old tricks of sneaking candy when I wasn't looking and rocking her "crying" babies. We spent Saturday at home, running back and forth to the potty and changing wet undies every few hours. Potty training is coming along, but we're still not there yet.

On Sunday afternoon, she and I went to The Oread in Lawrence to a meet and greet with Elsa. She wore her little blue Elsa dress, and she LOVED it. Now she is bed, sleeping off the excitement from the day.

We Love March of Dimes. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/2/march-of-dimes Are you the mommy or daddy of a baby that was born early?

I am.

My little girl was born at 34 weeks and 5 days--almost 6 weeks early-- and even though we knew the likelihood of having a premature baby, it was still a shock. How small she was. How vulnerable I felt she was. How fragile. But how TOUGH.

It was definitely one of those moments when you look at your partner and say "Here we go, ready or not!"

The March of Dimes is an organization that helps financially burdened families deal with the shock of having a premature baby. Because let's face it--even when you think you are prepared for a baby, you're really never as ready as you think. Prematurity can affect so many things physically, but also emotionally. It is scary to have a premature baby.

I have decided that 25% of all my profits from February and March will go directly to March of Dimes. For session fees and products.

Any family that HAS a premature little one--whether they're brand new or 29 years old--will also receive 1 16x20 mounted print of their choice (valued at $125) after their portrait session.

Reagan has been on a block kick the last week or so, and she loves to build "towers" and "castles" and show them to whoever will see. This photo was taken right after she woke up yesterday morning. She hadn't worried about breakfast or changing clothes. Only blocks.

Right now, she is napping, and there is a twenty-block-high tower behind me. Surely, I'll forget it's there and knock it over before she wakes up, but she won't care. She'll just build it again.

Momtographer: A New Blog Series https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/1/momtographer-a-new-blog-series Before anything else in my life, I am a mom. I spend my whole day at my day job thinking about my daughter, wondering what she is doing and missing her little giggle. I normally call at least once every morning, just so I can hear her say so excitedly "Hi Momma!" and tell me what she is doing.

It's the best part of my day until I get home.

This new series will be posts about my life as a "momtog." It's almost a dirty word around the professional photography world, but it is what my life is right now. I am a working mom who also has a photography business.

I'll give tips and tricks, recipe ideas, and advice on making the most of the craziness you may feel you have thrown yourself into.

If you have ideas for upcoming posts that might fit into this series, contact me! Or maybe you would like to write a guest post? We can arrange that too!

1/52. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2017/1/1/52 I wrote recently about personal projects and how much it refreshes me when things get too hectic. Picking up my camera for something that isn't labeled as work. "Work" turns out to be a pretty powerful word in the grand scheme of life. If I am doing it for pleasure, it's takes on new life.

I am so happy that I have decided to pick this particular person project back up, especially since the past week, the first of the new year, has already been a little wonky.

Every week, I will be sharing a photo of my daughter, Reagan, just doing what she does. Coloring, lounging, being adorable. Ideally I would like to capture something every single day, but that's just not feasible right now.

At the end of 2017 (or beginning of 2018) I will make a book of her 52 weeks to add to the first one from 2015. 2016 is just going to have to be the year that was lost. I'll blame the craziness of my day job.

I hope you all enjoy it and come back every week (probably Sundays) to see what Reagan-poo has been up to! This week's photo is catching her in an almost-naptime moment. She likes to sleep in her pack and play still at my Mom's house. And of course, she has to have 1,259,250 stuffed animals with her while she sleeps.

Also, I am curious about your own personal projects? What are they? What do they entail?

Why Your Walls Need (BIG) Portraits https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/12/why-your-walls-need-big-portraits You love your family. We know you do. You know you do. So, why aren't you SHOWING people that you do?

When I go into people's homes, there's nothing I love more than to see a big portrait of their family. Bigger than an 8x10. Like 24x36 kind of BIG.

Right now, I have a large canvas of my daughter staring me in the face in my office. It's my favorite photo of her EVER, and if a larger canvas would fit on my shelf, I would have a bigger one. I love this photo that much.

I'm not saying that a gallery wall of 8x10s means you love your family less. But a big piece makes a statement.

Have you ever imagined your walls with BIG art? Do it now. Do you have photos that would work? Photos that are sharp and exposed correctly and professionally printed and mounted on archival paper in a beautiful frame? Look at your walls right now.

Now let's decide when your portrait session should be!

Personal Projects https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/12/personal-projects  I used to have a personal blog. I wrote all sorts of things there. Poetry, rants, nonsensical essays, lists. Stuff that I couldn't fit into a journal and was faster to type than write. I didn't renew my domain name last year, and my blog went by the wayside. And I have to say that besides giving up Project Life, it was one of the most freeing things I have ever done. Blogging had become something that I felt I had to do to be consistent and retain followers, but it wasn't something that I loved anymore.

One thing that kept my blog moving forward was personal projects. I started my favorite, a 52 week photography project in 2015, and I took a photo of Reagan once a week every week for the entire year. In January, I compiled them and had her first book made.

This year, I stopped at around week 6. It has been a busy and crazy and exhausting and stupid year, if I am being truthful. I had no energy for a personal project, and it had somehow become just another thing to mark off the to-do list. Now, I am sad that I didn't keep up with it. I also realize just how much GOOD it did me to have that few minutes every week to plan a different photo than the week before. It helped my creativity and gave me that calm I need.

Looking forward to 2017, I plan on picking back up on the 52 week project for Reagan. One day, I will truly, truly cherish every single moment I have in those books. I don't want to regret not having them just because I got overwhelmed.

What kinds of personal projects do you keep? Are they something you really love? Or are they a chore?

(If they're a chore, cut that crap out now. Life is too short to waste on something you don't love.)

The Loyas | Christmas Time | Topeka, Kansas Family Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/12/the-loyas-christmas-time-topeka-kansas-family-photographer My sister and I have been trying to schedule her and her husband's Christmas photos for about a month, but we finally managed to get them done. It was drizzly out on the morning we met, but it wasn't too cold.

We had ideas already laid out, so even if it had been super freezing, we had a plan. Mapped out. You could say we're planners.

It took us 31 minutes or so to make our way around Ward Meade Park, and we got some really good shots!

Why I Love Photography https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/12/why-i-love-photography Everyone has their thing. The thing that calms them down and relaxes them. Their anti-stress. For me, that's my camera.

The first time that I realized that looking at things in a different way was helpful for me was about a year after my spinal cord injury. I spent a lot of time first in the hospital, then at home, and didn't have much to actually DO. I started college, but I needed a hobby. I had loved photography in high school and decided to buy a DSLR and get myself out of the routine of just doing homework.

I wasn't even sure I could HOLD a DSLR with my weak hands, but guess what, I did. And it made my hands and wrists stronger. It became a kind of therapy for me. I photographed things mostly, flowers, trees, that kind of thing, and eventually ventured into photographing my nieces and nephews.

Now I am a full-flown portrait photographer with an even heavier camera, but for me, it still feels the same as it did then. It calms me. It excites me when my clients LOVE their photos. It makes me proud when they want to display photos I have taken in their home.

It helps me focus on what I am capable of, instead of some of the things I'm not.

It's my things, I guess.

The Galyean Family | Family Time | Overbrook, Kansas Photographer https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/12/the-galyean-family-family-time-overbrook-kansas Barbara and Corey are good people. You can just tell when you meet them. They're both on the volunteer fire department with my husband, and they're involved in all the fun stuff that goes along with that too.

And their girls are good girls. Respectful, hilarious, and totally easy to photograph.

Barbara and I have been trying to set up a good time for their family portraits, and finally we snagged her husband for an afternoon and made it happen. This family is so fun and laid-back that the session went pretty perfect (Except for a football game going on at one of our locations--but we will hit it next time). It was chilly, but nothing that a blanket and a little leaf-throwing couldn't cure.

I am thankful... https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/11/why-i-am-thankful-for-my-clients Every so often we come across a client that is so like us that we become friends. This year, I can say I have had several clients that fit into this category, ones that I hope to work with in the future and am confident will hire me again.

I am thankful for these people who trust me with their family portraits and are pushing me toward a full-time job doing what I love.  With their love and support, I will be able to do all the things I want to do as a mom and a business owner. For me, that's a big deal. I couldn't do it without them.

I am thankful that I still find photography enjoyable and make it a priority, even when I am feeling burned out with everything else.

I am thankful for the moments I can capture, not just in my own life, but in other people's too.

I am thankful that my confidence is building and that it has brought new opportunities this year--like not feeling overwhelmed at the thought of capturing someone's wedding day. It's a big job--and I have done it twice now.

I am just thankful in a giving season. I am excited and nervous for business goals next year, but I am thankful to be in the position to make them.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

How To Dress For Your Family Session https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/11/how-to-dress-for-your-family-session I always have clients asking me what they should wear, what looks good on camera, and if matchy matchy is cliche. I try to guide them, and most of the time it turns out fine. There has been a few times that after the session and the client has sat down to look at their photos, they aren't happy with what they wore or what their spouse wore. They might not like that color of shirt on this kid, and that graphic tee that is so cute, well, it just didn't look as fancy as they had hoped.

It happens. Sometimes things don't turn out like we thought they would.

Here is a little guide to help plan things prior to your shoot so that last minute decisions don't turn into regrets later!

Producitivity In My Business. https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/11/producitivity-in-my-business Being a business owner is tough work. And being a business owner who also holds a full-time job, plus raising a family feels near impossible sometimes. When I decided a few years ago that this business deserved my attention and real grit to make it work, I had to streamline some things, get seriously organized, and make my workspace/office as efficient as it could be. I had to prioritize and gave up some personal craft projects that weren't fulfilling anymore, which left some serious space for marketing materials and shipping boxes. That felt very freeing.

It felt very "adult" to say no to things that were what I wanted anymore and yes to the things I did.

Some things are still a work in progress (my office that I share with my 2-year-old as her play room), and the time feels thin between my full-time job and being a mom. But it's all coming together.

Tools I use:

My iPhone "Reminders" App

I use this for lists. Ideas. Props. Sessions. Marketing. If I am away from my planner (like during my full-time job), this is where it all goes. It helps me keep it all in one place, and I can transfer lists to my planner later if need be.

Colorvale Planner
I have a friend who is a photographer in Iowa, and she recently posted her new planner. This planner. I was skeptical at first, just because my bullet journal seemed to be working fine for me, but she seemed really impressed and focused with help of this new pretty planner. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now, and I have to say, it is a game changer for me. It really has helped to have one planner devoted to my business, rather than my bullet journal, which was a mix of home, personal, day job, and business. It was good and bad for me.

Methods

A steady and simple workflow
I try not to complicate things too much in anything. It doesn't help me get work done, and it certainly doesn't keep me on task. I keep a workflow that stays simple and methodical, and I can usually cull, edit, blog and get a session ready for reveal in less than a week. That's with a full-time job too. I can only imagine how fast things will fall into place when this becomes my full-time job.

Xander and Soleil | Pregnancy Announcement | Topeka, KS https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/11/xander-and-soleil-pregnancy-announcement-topeka-ks Now that the cat is out of the bag....I can blog!

A few weeks ago, I got a text that said "Is this still Carrie's phone number?" Ummmm yes, yes it is. It was my old buddy Xander. With a secret.

\\\\\\

Xander and I went to high school together for one year. We never talked. We didn't know each other. We had mutual friends, but not many.

In college, our friend group became larger, and we became friends through those mutual friends. We spent a lot of time at Sharkey's, and we spent our college biology class trying to stay awake or not laugh. I will be forever thankful because Xander is one of the best guys I know. Really, he is.

Over the years I saw Xander date girls who probably didn't deserve him or understand him or get his weird sense of humor, then he met Soleil. And that was it.

\\\\\\

They have been married for a little over two years now, so I immediately guessed that there would be a little one soon. I love nothing more than seeing someone's face who just found out they're pregnant. Happy, scared, tired, hopeful, excited. I was honored that they would have thought of me to help them with how they would announce their big news.

We spent an afternoon last weekend at Gage Park, looking for trees that Soleil could safely get in and looking for great light. Not hard. Plus Xander and Soleil are so photogenic that it was a breeze.

Can't wait to see their baby in just 7 months!

Lexi | Senior Days | Washbrun Rural High School | Ward Meade Park | Topeka, Kansas https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/10/lexi-senior-days-ward-meade-park-topeka-kansas I was contacted by Lexie's grandma, Irene, and I actually didn't get to meet Lexie until the day of the shoot. But this girl is so personable. She was easy to pose because look at her--she's gorgeous! She brought her best friend for a few shots and her dog for a few others!

It was a great afternoon at Ward Meade Park again. The sunlight was spot on, and it wasn't as hot as we expected it to be thankfully!!

Angela & Randy Bratcher | Wedding | October 22, 2016 | The Garden House | Lake Shawnee | Topeka, KS https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/10/angela-randy-bratcher-wedding-october-22-2016-the-garden-house-lake-shawnee-topeka-ks In my life, I have met couples who make a better team than they do separately, and I can say FOR SURE that this describes Angela and Randy to the fullest. I knew Angela for years before I became their family photographer. We grew up in the same neighborhood, and our younger brothers were close friends at a young age too. I remember her being a little older than me, and she was one of those girls that I wanted to be like. She is beautiful and always had the best hair.

Angela and Randy have been planning their wedding for a while, and during that time, their family grew solid and strong changing the way their big day was mapped. Randy's daughter, Destiny, walked with him down the aisle, and Shyanne walked Angela down the aisle. Each girl stayed there during the ceremony. It made the short ceremony emotional and touching, knowing that this was a family who had already committed.

At the reception, I was talking to Randy's mom and Angela's dad on the deck just above where the ceremony was held, and her dad said "I have never seen her as happy as he is with him. It's hard for a dad to accept another guy after your daughter has been hurt before. But Randy was different right away." I almost cried.

I can only wish the happiest of futures for these 2 and their daughters. They so deserve it.

Olivia | Sweetheart Sessions | Leglar Barn | Lenexa, Kansas https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/10/olivia-sweetheart-sessions-leglar-barn-lenexa-kansas Olivia is the daughter of my husband's first cousin, Karen, and we have talked multiple times about getting photos of her but never quite found the time. This year, we made a point to get it done. I am so glad that we did!

She was so good at posing, and she did every little turn and twist I asked of her. And it shows in her photos!

Reagan, my daughter, and Olivia are about 4 years apart, but they played so well that day, and I can't wait to get these two together more often. Playground dates in the spring!

Catie and Ryan | Topeka, KS | Ward Meade Park | Wedding | October 15, 2016 https://www.carriesundayphotography.com/blog/2016/10/catie-and-ryan-topeka-wedding-october-15-2016 I have known Catie for a while. We actually "met" randomly on Twitter through mutual friends, and we conversed from afar for quite a while. When Ryan proposed, I was so excited for her! I had put a promotion out on my business page right around the time of their proposal, letting everyone know that I would in fact be venturing into wedding photography this year. I didn't have anyone particular in mind when I wrote that little blurb. Catie was the first bride-to-be to contact me.

And I am so thankful that she did.

You see couples who are just good together, ones that just click, and they don't need to flaunt it for everyone to know or see it. That is Catie and Ryan. They are just good together.

Their wedding was sweet and simple and very well put together. The colors--navy and orange--were perfect for a fall day, and even though there is still a lot of green left here in Kansas, they all complimented each other perfect. And Catie's dress. And flowers. And ring. Gahhhhhh, beautiful!

We shot at Ward Meade Park in Topeka, Kansas prior to their ceremony with family and their bridal party. I am always so in love with the raised flower beds, and they were perfect as our backdrop for group shots. The overgrowth of greenery felt very "homey" to me, and that fits Catie and Ryan very well.

The ceremony was held in the small chapel right in the park. It held about 50ish people, and it felt like the perfect amount. Not too long and not too short. I kept watching Ryan and the way he kept looking at Catie. It cemented it for me that these two are so good together.

We drove to NOTO after the ceremony, and if you know me, you know I love NOTO for shoots. The grunge, the dirtiness, the DUMPSTERS. This was an inside joke and totally worth the awkward looks and comments we got from the neighbors. Like, who the heck takes their wedding photo in an alleyway? Um, we do. And I love it.

The reception was at Sacred Heart Church. Such great fun. So much dancing. So much LOVE for this couple. I hope that Catie and Ryan have a long, happy, not-full-of-drama life and that they can let things rolls off their backs as well as they did on their big day.
